City of Bloomington City of Bloomington powered by NEOGOV ® Inspector IV - Multi-Discipline Salary $75,483.20 - $83,200.00 Annually Location IL, IL Job Type Full-Time Job Number 01004 Department Development Services Division Building Safety Opening Date 05/06/2026 Closing Date 5/27/2026 11:59 PM Central FLSA Non-Exempt Hours/Shift Mon-Fri 7:30-3:30 DESCRIPTION BENEFITS QUESTIONS Description To perform a responsible level of inspection work in securing compliance with the municipal building, electrical, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and plumbing code provisions. To review and inspect plans/specifications, for commercial, multi-family and one- or two-family structures. This position will be responsible for permitting and inspection of residential one- and two-family projects to verify compliance with applicable Building and Construction Codes. Work involves the performance of varied inspection and clerical tasks related to zoning, building, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing codes. This position will serve as back-up inspector for HVAC and electrical inspectors. Review and examination of building plans, issuance of building permits and improvement permits, and inspection of construction or improvement projects to ensure compliance with appropriate municipal ordinances. Examples of Duties The Inspector IV - Multi Discipline may be called upon to do any of the following: (These examples may not include all of the tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor do they cover all of the specific duties which may be required.) Receive, review and examine projects prior to construction to ensure code requirements; follow up on building plans to ensure adherence to applicable Building and Zoning Codes and approved plans. Record and save all permits issued to ensure proper compliance with applicable codes. Check on complaints received for validity of complaint; act accordingly in meeting applicable City Codes. Ensure adherence to departmental and city guidelines and policies. Inspections and compliance in Mobile Home Parks as it relates to the physical hookups and disconnects of mobile units. Inspect Mobile Home sites for proper hookup and disconnect means as it pertains to building, electrical, HVAC and plumbing. Issue permits and calculate fees for Mobile Home Park sites as it relates to building, electrical, HVAC and plumbing. Receive municipal code enforcement complaints related to building, electrical, HVAC and plumbing, refuse, property maintenance, etc.; investigate complaints. Substitute for other Inspector positions in the building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and other areas as needed. Typical Qualifications Considerable knowledge of regulations and laws relating to building construction, zoning, HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Considerable knowledge of the techniques, methods and materials involved in building construction and alteration. Considerable knowledge of possible defects and flaws in building construction and of effective corrective measures. Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and materials and to ascertain the stage of construction when defects are most easily found and remedied. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and officials, craftsmen, building owners, contractors and the general public. Ability to understand and work from plans, drawings, and diagrams. Ability to present ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to identify errors in correct hookup and disconnects of Mobile Homes.Certificates/Licenses:
Possession of a valid Illinois Driver's License. Within 12 months of hire, obtain the following certifications: International Code Council's (ICC's) Residential Building Inspector, Residential Mechanical Inspector, and Residential Electrical Inspector. In addition, within 12 months of hire, obtain one of the following certifications or licenses: ICC's Residential Plans Examiner, or ICC's Commercial Electrical Inspector, or ICC's Commercial Mechanical Inspector, ICC's Commercial Building Inspector, ICC's P2 Commercial Plumbing Inspector or Illinois Plumbing License.Education/Experience:
