Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Check plans and specifications, perform difficult and skilled inspection of residential and/or commercial and industrial construction to insure compliance with the Citys Ordinances and for quality of workmanship.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Department of Building and Safety Engineering Director or other designated official. The employee is expected to exercise mature judgment in handling assignments.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision is exercised over City Building Inspectors.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: Inspect residential and/or commercial and industrial construction during and upon completion to insure compliance with City ordinances and for quality of workmanship. Check plans and specifications for proposed alterations, additions, new structures or uses to insure compliance with the City ordinances and estimate permit fees. Supervise the work of City Building Inspectors. Set up work methods and assign definite areas of responsibility. Assist and advise contractors and others in making out applications and issue permits. Investigate violations of building ordinances while in the field. Take necessary action in case of violation to enforce ordinances, make court appearances. Provide assistance and information to contractors and the general public in regard to City building ordinances. Maintain records and prepare detailed reports of inspections, complaints, and violations; prepare necessary correspondence. Perform necessary visual grade inspections on sites and recommend methods of correction when necessary. Work in cooperation with Heating, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Inspectors. Assign inspections to City Building Inspectors. Perform related work as assigned. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices as related to construction methods, techniques and materials. Considerable knowledge of and the ability to interpret City building ordinances. Ability to analyze complex structural designs to determine structural safety. Ability to detect structural and other faults and to determine quality of workmanship. Ability to understand and work with specifications, blue prints, and drawings. Ability to prepare comprehensive reports in connection with inspections, complaints and violations of ordinances. Considerable knowledge of materials, tools, methods, and techniques used in building construction work. Considerable knowledge of possible dangers and hazards arising from faulty construction work. Ability to supervise City Building Inspectors in their work. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees. Considerable knowledge of BS&A software (Equalizer Software systems) computer program and Microsoft Office.
