General Definition of Work Performs work inspecting commercial and residential buildings and construction sites, existing residential and commercial properties in the city, reporting and issuing violations, ensuring compliance with the city codes, completing required reports, and related work as apparent or assigned Work is performed under the supervision of the Building and Codes Supervisor. Performs inspections of buildings and construction both residential and commercial to ensure compliance with all adopted city and state building codes; visits construction sites as assigned; reviews plans and specifications; conducts inspections of actual construction; ensures corrections are made to meet compliance. Performs data entry for inspections to keep a record on buildings within the city; prepares reports as required; maintains records and files. Communicate with builders/citizens to explain building and housing codes. Advise applicants, contractors, and property owners on code requirements and inspection processes. Monitors state and federal laws, codes, and requirements to ensure internal compliance. Performs occasional Property Maintenance Code inspections on residential and commercial properties, write reports, and issues citations. May assist in researching, drafting, and rewriting municipal codes, participate in the development of forms and processes utilized to address various issues. Must be courteous and helpful to customers, staff, and public. Performs additional duties as required. Follow city and department policies, procedures, and safety rules. Minimum Qualifications High Scholl diploma or GED is required. One to three years' experience in building and construction inspection and code and law compliance or equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid State Driver's License. Special Qualifications Obtain International Code Council (ICC) Residential Code Certification within twelve months of hire. Obtain ICC International Residential Plumbing Inspector Certification within twelve months of hire. Obtain ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector Certification within two and a half years of hire. Obtain ICC Residential Electrical Inspector Certification within two and a half years of hire. Obtain ICC Property Maintenance Code Inspector Certification within two and a half years of hire. Obtain ICCC Commercial Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical Inspector Certifications within five years of hire. May require possession of, or ability to obtain, specific licenses, and/or certifications. Pay ranges from $23.60 per hour up to $37.75 per hour, plus a generous benefit package.
