Job Description
UCG Technicians are responsible for pinpointing the paths of cables, pipes and other conduits that carry utilities underground. The technician's efforts protect underground utilities from damage during projects involving excavation.

Utility Detection & Marking:
Use specialized equipment (e.g., electrical, magnetic, GPS, blueprint analysis, and/or radar) to detect and mark underground utility lines accurately.Work Order Management:
Read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and job-site drawings to identify utility paths.Communication:
Coordinate with contractors, property owners, and local authorities regarding utility locations and project updates.Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of interactions, utilities, job-site conditions, and complete work using tablets or paper documentation.Safety Compliance:
Follow all federal, state, and local safety laws and company safety policies, including 811 Call Before You Dig procedures.Equipment Maintenance:
Inspect, maintain, and calibrate locating equipment regularly to ensure operational reliability.Customer Service:
Represent the company in a professional manner while interacting with clients, vendors, and the public.Required Qualifications:
Education & Certification:
Valid Driver's License with clean driving record. High School Diploma or GED.Experience:
None Required.Skills & Competencies:
Strong attention to detail. Passion for accuracy. Self-motivated and able to work alone. Strong communication skills to interact with the public. Ability to follow instructions.Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in utility locating, construction, surveying, or similar field. Familiarity with 811 one-call system and state-specific dig laws.Work Environment:
Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow. Regularly working near heavy equipment and moving vehicles. Requires travel to multiple job sites daily.Physical Requirements:
Mobility and Physical Activity Must be able to walk several miles per day across uneven, rough, or inclined terrain such as construction sites, fields, gravel roads, ditches, and sidewalks. Must be able to remain on foot for long periods (up to 8-10 hours per shift). Required frequently to access and mark underground utilities. May involve prolonged kneeling or squatting. Occasionally may need to climb small embankments or step over obstructions. Regularly must reach above shoulders and below waist to use tools, open utility access points, or mark surfaces. Manual Dexterity and Motor Skills Must be able to operate electronic locating devices, spray painting utility markings, and handling small tools or equipment with precision. Must be able to grasp, lift, and use spray paint cans, wands, flags, and other tools repeatedly throughout the day. Ability to operate machinery, use tablets or GPS devices, and carry equipment. Lifting and Carrying Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally (e.g., lifting access covers, equipment bags, or tools). Equipment weighing up to 25 pounds must be carried routinely during shift across long distances. Visual and Auditory Requirements Must be able to read utility maps, tablets, and equipment screens. Accurate color vision is required for reading and applying color-coded utility markings. Important for job safety and awareness of surroundings (e.g., traffic, moving equipment).
