Job Title:
Utility Inspector Job Description The Utility Inspector supports third-party inspection services for natural gas line construction projects, focusing on accurate documentation and reporting for new and replacement pipelines. This role combines heavy administrative and documentation work with regular time in the field on active job sites, ensuring that all construction activities are properly measured, recorded, and reported using digital tools. Responsibilities Support all documentation and reporting activities for third-party inspection services on natural gas line installation and replacement projects. Monitor daily construction activities in the field as a third-party inspector and complete thorough site walks. Manage red-line drawings and as-built documentation for newly installed or replaced pipe. Record starting and stopping points for pipe segments based on project designs and document pipe depths accurately. Use a measuring wheel to obtain precise measurements of specific locations, similar to surveying tasks. Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and utility maps to verify work in the field. Use laptop-based programs and other digital tools to enter, update, and maintain all field data and inspection records. Prepare detailed field notes and reports that clearly document work performed, conditions observed, and any discrepancies. Apply strong quality assurance and quality control practices to ensure the accuracy and completeness of all documentation. Collaborate with field personnel, including the client's foreman and other project team members, to coordinate inspections and clarify project requirements. Work safely and consistently in active utility work zones, following all site safety requirements and wearing appropriate protective gear. Essential Skills Experience in a field engineering, technician, inspection, assistant project management, or similar role related to underground construction projects such as pipe, gas, electric, landfill, or civil work. Strong documentation skills using a tablet or computer in the field to capture detailed and accurate field notes. Ability to perform construction measurements using tools or systems such as Trimble, ArcGIS, or similar measurement technologies. Comfort working daily in the field where active utility construction is taking place. Demonstrated strength in quality assurance, quality control, and reporting, with high attention to detail. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and utility maps. Proficiency with laptop-based programs for data entry and record keeping in the field. Capability to walk job sites, push a measuring wheel, and work outdoors for extended periods. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in underground utility construction projects involving gas, electric, pipeline, landfill, or civil infrastructure. Prior experience as a third-party inspector or in roles that required extensive field reporting and site documentation. Familiarity with survey-style measurement practices and tools used in utility construction. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple documents, drawings, and reports for ongoing projects. Effective communication skills to coordinate with field crews and foremen on active job sites. Work Environment This role is based in and around the Bismarck, ND area, with work occurring within the city and approximately a 10-15 mile radius. The Utility Inspector spends time both working from a company truck and on active job sites when inspections are required. The position involves close collaboration with another team member and frequent interaction with the client's foreman and field crews. The schedule typically runs from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, for approximately 60-hour work weeks, with long-term work available throughout the construction season. The role offers the use of a company truck and fuel card, and the vehicle may be taken home. Work takes place outdoors in active utility construction environments, requiring comfort with varying weather and site conditions. When on the job site, the dress code includes wearing a hard hat, high-visibility shirt or vest, and composite or steel-toe work boots, in accordance with standard safety practices. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Mandan, ND. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
