Job Description

Utility Inspector Job Description The Utility Inspector will inspect water mains and related infrastructure, oversee replacement of lead service lines with copper, and ensure all work meets safety, structural, and regulatory standards. This role combines field inspections, construction oversight, and daily interaction with homeowners, requiring strong communication skills, solid construction knowledge, and the ability to document and report on project progress accurately. Responsibilities Inspect water mains and other structures such as roads, dams, bridges, and related utilities to verify structural soundness, safety, and compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Inspect existing lead service lines and oversee their replacement with copper service lines in accordance with project specifications and regulatory requirements. Document inspection results thoroughly, including observed deterioration, structural conditions, discrepancies between design and actual construction, and any required sampling. Prepare and contribute to daily construction reports and project status reports, accurately capturing progress, issues, and field observations. Supervise and coordinate subcontractors on site, ensuring that work follows plans, specifications, safety standards, and project schedules. Monitor construction activities and site conditions, including excavation and site development, to ensure quality workmanship and adherence to project requirements. Conduct on-site investigations and review relevant data such as maps, reports, tests, drawings, and other technical documentation as needed. Comply with all applicable guidelines, permits, and safety regulations, including OSHA standards, and maintain required technical files and documentation. Use mobile applications, tablets, and other digital tools to record inspection data, take photos, and complete required forms and reports. Canvass and survey project areas, including visiting residential properties, to coordinate inspections and communicate project activities with homeowners. Communicate clearly and professionally with homeowners, colleagues, and project partners to explain work being performed and address questions or concerns. Demonstrate technical proficiency and apply design and construction knowledge to identify issues and recommend corrective actions where appropriate. Maintain strong organizational practices to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and project assignments effectively. Collaborate with project teams, engineers, and construction personnel to support successful completion of large commercial, municipal, or federal utility projects. Essential Skills At least 2 years of construction inspection or engineering inspection experience. OSHA 10 certification. Proven ability to supervise subcontractors on site, including oversight of daily activities and construction documentation. Experience with construction inspection, utility construction, and utility industry projects. Ability to perform daily reporting and maintain accurate construction documentation. Strong verbal communication skills to interact with homeowners and project stakeholders on a daily basis. Strong writing skills to prepare clear, detailed reports and documentation. Good interpersonal skills to build and maintain productive relationships with colleagues, customers, and partners. Familiarity and comfort working with computers, tablets, phones, and mobile applications for data entry and reporting. Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines. Excellent attention to detail when inspecting work, reviewing documents, and completing reports. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Edison, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
