Job Title:
Inspection Technician Job Description The Inspection Technician performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters and related facilities to identify corrosion, damage, and potential safety issues. This entry-level role combines customer-facing work in residential settings with hands-on mechanical tasks, detailed documentation, and strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards. The position requires extensive walking and climbing throughout the day, clear communication with customers and internal teams, and a strong commitment to professionalism and reliability. Responsibilities Perform periodic facility inspections and surveys on utility-owned gas meters to identify corrosion, damage, and potential safety concerns. Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, in accordance with established procedures. Document inspection findings clearly and accurately in compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards. Complete all required paperwork and electronic documentation using field binders, tablets, and other provided tools. Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining accurate records and following prescribed processes. Perform audit reviews with operations teams and support them during audits by providing documentation and field insights. Communicate professionally with customers when entering homes, clearly explaining the purpose of inspections and answering basic questions. Interface with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed. Follow all safety protocols, including those covered in OSHA and company-specific training, to protect the public, customers, and co-workers. Use mechanical aptitude and tools provided to safely access and inspect equipment in a variety of residential and field environments. Walk several miles per day and climb stairs and ladders as needed to reach inspection locations during an 8-hour workday in all weather conditions. Work independently in the field, managing daily routes and schedules, while maintaining regular communication with supervisors about attendance and job progress. Participate fully in all required training, including classroom instruction, homework, practice exams, and certification testing, and apply this knowledge in the field. Maintain assigned equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment in good working order and report any issues promptly. Demonstrate punctuality, reliability, and professionalism in all interactions and daily operations. Essential Skills Valid state driver's license and reliable personal vehicle, with at least 1+ year of driving experience. Ability to enter customers' homes and interact with the public in a professional, courteous manner. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain inspection activities clearly. Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and consistent job history with 1+ year of professional work experience. Basic mechanical aptitude, with the ability to understand and work around equipment such as meters, piping, or similar mechanical systems. Ability to walk several miles per day and remain on your feet for an 8-hour workday, including climbing stairs and ladders, and working in all weather conditions. High school diploma or equivalent. Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage documentation, schedules, and field tasks accurately. Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work with customers, team members, and external stakeholders. Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively in a team setting. Intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra, with sufficient mechanical aptitude to understand inspection procedures and tools. Willingness and ability to use company vehicles or move company vehicles when required. Customer service orientation and a professional demeanor in all interactions. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in cable installation, HVAC, piping, automotive mechanics, or similar mechanical or field service roles is a plus. Previous experience in customer-facing roles, especially in residential environments, is beneficial. Familiarity with gas systems, utility environments, or field inspection work is an advantage. Comfort using handheld tablets and digital tools to receive routes and record inspection results. Ability to follow structured training programs, complete homework and practice exams on personal time, and pass certification tests within specified attempts. Strong initiative and self-sufficiency in managing daily tasks and routes in the field. Interest in long-term career growth within large-scale utility or infrastructure programs. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a 100% field-based position operating primarily within the utility service territory in Brooklyn and Queens. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with optional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor's request and at the contractor's discretion. Technicians typically report directly to job sites in Queens or Brooklyn using their own vehicles, receive their daily route via a handheld tablet, and work independently throughout the day. Tailboard meetings may occur at warehouse locations in Queens or Brooklyn. The role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, extensive walking, and frequent stair and ladder climbing. The work environment is safety-focused and structured, starting with OSHA and orientation training, followed by classroom instruction, homework and practice exams, certification testing, and supervised field shadowing. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period to evaluate performance, training engagement, and inspection competency. Equipment provided includes a simple tool set, flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. Field staff are expected to maintain a neat, professional appearance consistent with safety gear and company standards, and to communicate regularly with supervisors regarding attendance and scheduling. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Long Island City, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
