Job Description

Seeking candidates for a Building Inspector I/II at the City of Brentwood, TN Brentwood Planning & Codes Department Starting salary range is $60,756 - $74,817 depending on classification, experience, and qualifications, plus: $2,000 annual Transportation Supplement (paid over 26 pay periods) Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period The City of Brentwood is seeking qualified candidates for a Building Inspector I/II in the Planning & Codes Department. This position may be filled at either the Building Inspector I or Building Inspector II level depending on the selected candidate's experience, certifications, and overall qualifications. Brentwood is located in scenic Williamson County, just south of Nashville, and is known for its strong business community, quality schools, abundant recreational opportunities, and high standard of living. As a growing community with an active Planning & Codes Department, Brentwood places a high value on thoughtful development, strong code compliance, and excellent customer service. The Codes Enforcement section of the Planning & Codes Department works to help ensure the safety and quality of the built environment by applying the standards of the Brentwood Municipal Code and applicable building codes. The Building Inspector I/II will help ensure that buildings and related systems meet or exceed minimum standards for the protection, safety, and welfare of residents, property owners, occupants, and the general public. This is a great opportunity for a candidate with building inspection, design, or construction experience who is detail-oriented, service-minded, and comfortable working with builders, residents, contractors, developers, city staff, and the public. Performing inspections of buildings, plumbing systems, mechanical systems, and related construction to determine compliance with applicable codes, standards, and guidelines. Reviewing residential building plans, site layouts, maps, specifications, and construction methods for conformance with applicable code provisions. Accepting and processing permit applications and providing information or guidance related to permits, inspections, and certificates of occupancy. Communicating with builders, residents, contractors, developers, city officials, other inspectors, staff members, and the general public. Providing clear guidance to applicants regarding needed revisions or additions to plan submissions. Preparing routine correspondence, forms, reports, memoranda, and other department-related documents. Maintaining accurate records and using permitting software and other technology to complete daily work efficiently.
The ideal candidate:
Has experience in building inspection, design, construction, or a closely related field. Understands the importance of applying codes consistently, fairly, and professionally. Is able to read, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, plans, specifications, and related technical information. Communicates clearly and respectfully with residents, contractors, builders, developers, city officials, and coworkers. Demonstrates strong organizational, technical, and customer service skills. Is comfortable using independent judgment while also working collaboratively with a team. Shows attention to detail and a commitment to protecting the safety and quality of Brentwood's built environment. This position may be filled as either a Building Inspector I or Building Inspector II, depending on qualifications.
Building Inspector I Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Two years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, design, construction, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Valid driver's license required. Must have current ICC certification as a Residential Building Inspector. Prefer candidate to also have current ICC certifications as a Residential Plumbing Inspector, and Residential Mechanical Inspector, or the ability to obtain required certifications within six months of hire.
Building Inspector II Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate's or bachelor's degree preferred. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, design, construction, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Valid driver's license required. Current ICC certifications as a Building Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, and Mechanical Inspector in both residential and commercial disciplines required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment which includes a motor vehicle, calculator, telephone, camera and flashlight, and construction-related tools such as a probing rod, level, differential pressure gauge, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for light to medium work.

Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative and construction-related information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
LANGUAGE ABILITY
Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures related to the job of Building Inspector. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.
INTELLIGENCE
Requires the ability to learn and understand basic to complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of Building Inspector.
VERBAL APTITUDE
Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE
Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION
Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT
Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency related to the job of Building Inspector.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION
Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
