Building Inspector (Code Enforcement) Shelby County Government - 3.6 Memphis, TN Job Details Full-time 12 hours ago Qualifications Employee relationship building High school diploma or GED Construction industry experience Class D Full Job Description Position Summary Works under the general supervision of the Senior Inspector to make inspections to enforce and/or ensure conformance to Codes of Memphis and Shelby County Codes Enforcement.
Pay Grade:
51 Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education Minimum Qualifications Five (5) years of experience in the building construction industry; AND High school diploma or possess a
GED. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities Prepares for, conducts and follows up on inspections of new buildings and dwellings. Meets with contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners on matters relating to code regulations. Inspects structures during construction to ensure that procedures and materials meet approved standards. Follows up with re-inspections to verify compliance with regulations and approved plans. Issues work stops orders and citations for failure to comply with regulatory codes. Maintains accurate records and files. Reviews approved plans and specifications for compliance with regulatory codes. Takes corrective action against code violations. Patrols and inspection of work being done without permits. Stays current with technical publications. Assists with the training of new inspectors. Performs other related duties as assigned. KSA's Knowledge of codes, laws and ordinances relating to the construction of various structures. Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in construction. Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. Ability to detect deviations from regulatory codes. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to independently research and gather information. Knowledge of OSHA laws. Knowledge of the International Building Codes, International Residential and other applicable codes. Ability to enforce codes and regulations. Ability to work with the public. Ability to discuss, explain, and interpret codes requirements. Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records. Ability to perform detailed inspections. Ability to communicate effectively both, orally and in writing. Ability to use sound judgment in decision making. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Physical Requirements Work involves exposure to areas under construction. Must possess physical dexterity to access all areas during construction including, but not limited to, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, accessing attics and walking on uneven terrain. Special Requirements Must have a valid Tennessee "Class D" Driver's License. Must be a certified Building Inspector (ICC) or obtain certification within twelve (12) months of date of employment. This means exemption from this policy is in effect for the following departments and positions: (1) Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers, Deputy Jailers and Dispatchers, employed by the Sheriff Department, (2) Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, (3) Firefighters, Paramedics and Dispatchers employed by the Shelby County Fire Department. The residency exemption for public safety/civil service employees does not include Appointed positions with Sheriff's Office, Division of Corrections or the Fire Department.
