Job Description

The Plumbing Inspector 1 within the Department of Codes Administration reviews approved plans and inspects new and existing plumbing installations to ensure compliance with Metro Plumbing Codes and other regulatory requirements. The Metro Department of Codes and Building Safety, During the 2025 fiscal year, Codes issued and tracked $3.8 billion in building permits. The department concerns itself with the safety of the public as occupants in homes and buildings throughout the county and promotes beautiful neighborhoods through the enforcement of local codes and zoning regulations. Codes is an exciting and fast paced environment for those passionate about public safety in the construction and planning sectors. •If you have applied in the last six months, you do not need to reapply.•Prepare, conduct, and follow-up on inspections of plumbing installations. Review approved plans and specifications. Meet with contractors, plumbers, and/or homeowners on matters relating to code regulations. Inspect installations to ensure that procedures and material meet approved standards. Follow-up with re-inspections to verify compliance with regulations and approved plans. Perform emergency inspections as needed. Prepare daily field inspection reports. Provide technical advice and assistance to plumbers, contractors, and home owners upon request. Perform administrative duties including maintaining accurate records and preparing daily field inspection reports. High School Diploma and 5 years of plumbing inspection, plumbing installation or related experience. •Additional education may be considered in lieu of some experience (1:1 ratio). Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
LICENSES REQUIRED
Valid Driver License State of Tennessee Plumbing Inspector's Certificate Certified by the International Code Council (ICC), as follows: Certified Residential Plumbing Inspector Certified Commercial Plumbing Inspector •Any employee appointed to this classification shall obtain one of the two required certifications within the first twelve (12) months from the effective date of their appointment to said classification, and obtain both required certifications within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment date. Failure to obtain the first certification within a one (1) year period shall result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Failure to obtain both certifications within two (2) years of employment date shall result in disciplinary action.

All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
