May Trains others and lead the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities to include contractors. May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:
 The essential duties for Construction Inspector IVEnsures inspectors turn in monthly estimates in an accurate and timely manner to facilitate payments to contractors.

May serve as a lead worker or project leader.

Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.

Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers.

Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.

Ensures adequate levels of equipment and materials are assigned to projects; ensures material tests are performed and materials meet required standards.

Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.

Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel.

Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems.

Interprets plans and specifications and negotiates with producers and suppliers to resolve differences.

Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.

Prepares monthly and final estimates.

Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.

Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for Construction Inspector V and VIRejects substandard material and informs producers and suppliers of material and production problems.

Trains and makes training-related recommendations to staff on new operations.
