  • ( 2601327 ) Position Information TxDOT's Austin District is looking for one Construction Inspector II, III, or IV based in Bastrop, TX at the Bastrop Area Office .
This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, project management, routine and contract maintenance inspection, material field testing and documentation, bridge inspection and record keeping, and assisting the public during emergency situations. For a complete list of our total compensation package please visit our website at: Total Compensation Package To view benefits available to all State of Texas employees visit: Benefits at a Glance | ERS (texas.gov) Position Description This position inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
The essential duties for a Construction Inspector II, III, and IV include: Calculates payments due contractors for work completed. Observes and inspects ongoing construction work. Drives/travels to geographically separated fabrication plants/project sites to monitors program status; perform unannounced inspection of operations, and problem resolution. Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Additional essential duties for a Construction Inspector III or IV include: Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications. Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades; as required moves traffic control devices and barricades. Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications. Additional essential duties for a Construction Inspector IV include: Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees. Conducts project reviews and coordinates inspections with various inspectors and other district/division project managers. Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans and ensures adherence to approved safety standards. Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education :
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience :
Construction Inspector II:
1 YEAR of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
Construction Inspector III:
2 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.
Construction Inspector IV:
3 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for
Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications :
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Competencies:
The competencies for a Construction Inspector II, III, and IV include: Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external. Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps Performing calculations using algebra, trigonometry and geometry. Interpreting applicable information Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Additional competencies for a Construction Inspector III and IV include: Basic traffic management and control procedures The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports Additional competencies for a Construction Inspector IV include: Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques Persuasion and negotiation of critical issues Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
