Job Description

The purpose of this position is to accurately locate water and sewer lines as requested in advance of construction activities. Inspect and enforce rules and ordinances related to franchise utilities Right-of Way construction and permits Inspect construction operations including ditch compaction and roadway repairs; Respond to requests from citizens, home builders, and general contractors for location of water or sewer lines in advance of construction activities; Locate water and sewer lines using a variety of equipment. Mark location of lines to prevent damage resulting from construction; Assist customer service employees in locating manholes, meters, and service lines; Enforce City of Lubbock Ordinance Chapter 36.09 and City of Lubbock Excavation Manual, issue ordinance violation tickets as needed; Perform other duties as assigned. Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent with an additional one year of college education or specialized advanced training in construction methods or procedures with and additional two years of experience dealing with construction methods or procedures.
Knowledge of:
The fundamental principles of construction methods and engineering plans; The principles and practices of engineering and construction inspection and testing; Public Works processes and procedures.
Ability to:
Read and interpret engineering drawings, surveyor's notes, blueprints and maps; Communicate effectively with others. Operate a computer; Communicate and work effectively with internal and external customers and the general public; Deal effectively with others in a courteous manner; Speak in a clear and concise manner; Operate a variety of office equipment; Accurately relay information from maps and blueprints to citizens, home builders, and general contractors; Follow written and oral instructions; Maintain detailed records on pipe specifications including location, size, depth, and type of material. Physical Requirements Continuously lift and carry up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Frequently stand and walk during the shift. Occasionally climb ladders, stairs, and other inclined surfaces. Occasionally bend and kneel during the shift. Push and pull objects. Frequently flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees. Occasionally rotate upper trunk to the left and right while sitting or standing. Place arms above, at, and below shoulder height. Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
