Job Description

General Definition of Work Combination Building Inspector FLSA:
Non-Exempt Performs intermediate technical work in the inspection of all phases of building construction; performs related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Performing field inspections of residential and commercial facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes; preparing and maintaining files; preparing reports. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Performs residential and commercial mechanical, plumbing, electrical and building inspections.
  • Answers telephone for scheduling inspection times on job sites.
  • Creates inspection reports on permits.
  • Answers customers code questions.
  • Maintains daily log.
  • Operates computer to obtain inspection permits.
  • Attends various meetings.
  • Attends various training classes.
  • Maintains certification.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of all types of building construction materials and methods and stages of construction when possible violations and defects may be most easily observed and corrected; general knowledge with state building and related codes laws and ordinances; ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazards of fire and collapse; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints accurately and to compare them with construction in process; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to contact property owners, contractors and the public and effect satisfactory working relationships; firmness and tact in enforcing ordinances and codes. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable tradesman experience including building, electric, plumbing and mechanical. Physical Requirements This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, fingering, and feeling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and the ability to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices; operation of motor vehicles or equipment; determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, and hazards. Special Requirements Possession of a driver license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. State certification in building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical for 1 and 2 family dwellings, commercial and industrial. Erosion /Sediment control and amusement device certification will be optional. These certifications are required to be achieved within 18-months of employment.
