Job Description

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Public Infrastructure Inspector to review plans and specifications and inspects projects in the right of way, sidewalk, alley or paving for compliance with contracts, ADA requirements, OSHA standards and city code and will issue violation/non-compliance notices. The successful applicant will inspect right of way, street, sidewalk, alley and related construction projects of contractors, developers and other builders at beginning of, during and end of work for compliance with plans, specifications and standards and inform contractor of deviations or errors and advises as to corrective action; track and keep progress records in MS Microsoft databases and Trackit permit software; and conduct routine tests in the field. High school diploma or general education degree (GED);experience with email, MS Word and Excel software; two to three years related experience and/or training in a sub-professional engineering position; or equivalent combination of education and experience. SUMMARY Reviews plans and specifications and inspects projects in the right of way, sidewalk, alley or paving for compliance with contracts. ADA requirements, OSHA standards and city code and will issue violation/non-compliance notices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Inspects right of way, street, sidewalk, alley and related construction projects of contractors, developers and other builders at beginning of, during and end of work for compliance with plans, specifications and standards Tracks and keeps progress records in Microsoft databases and Trackit permit software. Coordinates project work with other City departments Informs contractor of deviations or errors and advises as to corrective action Takes samples of materials for testing quality Conducts routine tests in the field Inspects street cuts made for utility purposes Inspects sidewalks for public hazards and schedules/coordinates repairs Inspects material received by contractors at project site to determine whether or not it meets the required specifications Operates equipment in snow removal program

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); experience with email, MS Word and Excel software; two to three years related experience and/or training in a sub-professional engineering position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress. Ability to prepare reports and correspondence in MS Word. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid appropriate drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
