Building Inspector I:
Starting at $ 26.7379 / hour, $ 55,614.83 / annual
Building Inspector II:
Starting at $ 29.4798 / hour, $ 61,317.98 / annual
Building Inspector III:
Starting at $ 32.5015 / hour, $67,603.12 / annual The City of Laramie is accepting applications for a Building Inspector I, II, or III. This is a two-year position, initially funded for only two years, but it may be eligible for an extension if approved by the City Council. The position involves conducting field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. The role also includes reviewing plans, issuing permits, and providing technical guidance to contractors, property owners, and the public to promote safe and lawful development within the community. Ideal candidates will be highly motivated individuals who want to make an impact in their community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Inspect buildings during various stages of construction, including new builds, alterations, repairs, and remodeling, to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations; check plans for code compliance and any special conditions or requirements. Inspect existing buildings for changes in use, occupancy, or compliance with applicable building codes and zoning ordinances. Perform plan reviews and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications for accuracy and compliance before permit issuance. Identify code, permit, and licensing violations; obtain and prepare evidence; issue notices to comply with violations; follow up on correction notices to ensure required corrections have been made. Work alongside the Permit Tech to approve the issuance of building and occupancy permits, compute permit fees, and issue permits. Confer with architects, contractors, builders, and the public in the field and office; explain and interpret requirements and restrictions. Confer with appropriate regulatory officials and supervisors on difficult inspections or on matters requiring interpretation. Maintain files and reports on inspection activities and findings. Attend and participate in professional group meetings and training; stay abreast of new trends, developments, and regulations in the fields of plan examination, building inspection, and construction. Experience with or ability to learn Tyler Permitting Software for the management and review of all plans and permits. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Building Official.
Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of the following experience and training would be qualifying. High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience as a skilled craftsperson or inspector in one or more of the building trades, including structural, electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, and fire prevention. One full year of academic training at a recognized Building Inspection Training trade school specializing in instruction on the International Codes. A special trade school certificate or special training in Building, Public Works, electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, and fire prevention inspection is an acceptable equivalent to skilled craft experience. Must have a valid driver's license or be able to obtain one. Ability to work in a standard office environment; exposure to outdoor conditions and ability to travel to different sites and locations. ICC (International Code Council) Residential Building Inspector certification is required or must be obtained within [6-12] months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong understanding of building construction methods, materials, and codes. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. Proficiency with inspection management software and standard office applications. Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed both in an office environment and outdoors at construction sites. Exposure to noise, dust, variable weather conditions, and potential hazards on construction sites. Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and lift up to [25-50] pounds.
Position Compensation and Benefits:
Non-exempt salary rates are calculated on an hourly basis and vary based on experience and qualifications.
