Position Summary The Directional Drilling Surveyor is responsible for providing accurate bore path guidance, surveying, and drilling navigation support for large-scale horizontal directional drilling operations. This role ensures the drill follows engineered alignments, maintains grade tolerances, and avoids underground utilities and obstacles. The Surveyor works closely with the HDD Superintendent, Drill Operator, and Project Management team to ensure successful and safe bore completion. This position requires extensive travel to project sites, with expected travel 90% or more of the time. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform pre-drill surveys, establish control points, and verify bore alignments and profiles Operate and maintain HDD guidance and locating systems (Tensteer, and Vector Magnetics gyro systems as required) Monitor and track bore progress, depth, Inc, and Azimuth during drilling operations Communicate real-time adjustments to the Drill Operator to maintain design tolerances Document bore data, as-built information, and daily drilling reports (Proficient with AutoCAD preferred) Identify and mitigate risks related to existing utilities, ground conditions, and bore deviations Assist with setup and calibration of drilling equipment and surveying instruments Ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and safety requirements Support potholing, utility verification, and site layout as needed Coordinate with engineers, inspectors, and project managers on bore accuracy and quality control Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Minimum 5 years of experience in HDD surveying or locating within pipeline or heavy civil construction Strong understanding of bore profiles, drilling plans, and alignment tolerances Proficiency with HDD guidance systems and surveying equipment (Total Station, GPS, wireline systems, etc.) Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and bore path designs Strong communication skills to coordinate with drill crews and field supervision Willingness and ability to travel 90% or more of the time and work extended hours as required by project schedules Valid driver's license and ability to work in outdoor environments in varying conditions Preferred Qualifications Experience surveying on large diameter HDD projects for pipeline installations Hands-on experience working with or supporting operations on American Auger or Prime Drill rigs (Preferred) Familiarity with deep bore, long crossings, and complex HDD profiles Knowledge of underground utility locating best practices and damage prevention standards Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly Ability to work in outdoor environments in all weather conditions Ability to safely navigate active construction sites
