  • Full-time Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Locator Position Summary We are seeking a dependable and experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Locator to support underground utility installation projects.
The HDD Locator is responsible for accurately tracking and guiding directional drilling operations using specialized locating equipment to ensure bores are completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications. This position plays a critical role in preventing utility strikes and maintaining bore accuracy during underground construction activities. Key Responsibilities Operate electronic locating equipment to track drill head location, depth, and alignment during directional drilling operations. Communicate continuously with HDD drill operators to maintain proper bore path and avoid existing underground utilities. Read and interpret utility locates, construction prints, bore plans, and maps. Verify existing utility locations prior to drilling operations. Monitor drilling progress and make real-time adjustments to bore direction as needed. Ensure compliance with all OSHA, company, and customer safety standards. Assist with potholing, utility verification, and site preparation activities. Maintain accurate bore logs, depth records, and production documentation. Inspect and maintain locating equipment, transmitters, receivers, and related tools. Identify potential hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately. Assist crew members with general labor duties when locating tasks are complete. Support job site cleanup and equipment organization. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum of 1-2 years of HDD locating experience preferred. Experience using locating systems such as DigiTrak, Subsite, or similar equipment. Knowledge of underground utility construction practices and safety procedures. Ability to read utility maps, staking sheets, and construction drawings. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred. Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding work. Preferred Qualifications Fiber optic, telecommunications, gas, water, on-grade sewer, or electrical utility experience. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. First Aid/CPR certification. Mechanical knowledge of HDD equipment and tooling. Experience with utility locating and damage prevention procedures. Working Conditions Outdoor construction environment with exposure to weather, mud, dust, and noise. Frequent walking over uneven terrain.
