  • Full-time Senior HDD Locator / Lead Locator Position Summary We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior HDD Locator / Lead Locator to oversee locating operations for underground utility construction projects.
This leadership role is responsible for accurately guiding directional drilling activities, mentoring field personnel, coordinating with drill operators and supervisors, and ensuring all bores are completed safely and efficiently. The Senior Locator serves as a key field leader responsible for maintaining production quality, utility protection, and crew safety on HDD projects. Key Responsibilities Lead and perform advanced locating operations during horizontal directional drilling activities. Accurately track drill head location, depth, pitch, and alignment using electronic locating systems. Direct drill operators to maintain bore path accuracy and avoid utility conflicts. Read and interpret utility locates, construction plans, bore profiles, and staking sheets. Verify existing utility locations and coordinate potholing activities as necessary. Serve as the primary field contact for bore accuracy, utility conflict resolution, and drilling guidance. Train and mentor locators, operators, and crew members on locating techniques, equipment usage, and safety procedures. Monitor production schedules and ensure projects stay on timeline and within specifications. Troubleshoot locating issues, signal interference, and complex bore conditions. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and customer requirements. Maintain daily drilling reports, bore logs, and production documentation. Inspect, calibrate, and maintain locating systems, transmitters, receivers, and support equipment. Coordinate with supervisors, utility representatives, inspectors, and customers on job progress and field conditions. Assist with job site setup, traffic control, restoration, and general crew support as needed. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of HDD locating experience required. Proven experience leading HDD crews or serving as a senior locator. Extensive experience with DigiTrak, Subsite, or equivalent locating systems. Strong knowledge of underground utility construction practices and damage prevention. Ability to read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and bore plans. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and make field decisions under pressure. Valid driver's license required; CDL required. Ability to travel and work overtime as project demands require. Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Preferred Qualifications Telecommunications, fiber optic, gas, water, on-grade sewer, or electrical utility experience. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. First Aid/CPR certification. Experience in complex or urban utility environments. Mechanical knowledge of HDD equipment and drilling fluid systems. Working Conditions Outdoor construction environment with exposure to weather, mud, dust, and noise. Frequent walking, standing, kneeling, bending, and lifting.
