We are currently seeking a Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Locator for a 1099 contract position, responsible for ensuring the safe and precise tracking of the drill head during underground utility installation projects. The Locator works closely with the Drill Operator to ensure that the drill follows the planned bore path and avoids any existing underground utilities, conduits, and other obstacles. This role requires expertise in reading maps, blueprints, and utility locations while adhering to safety protocols and project specifications.

Compensation:
$36 - $45 / hour + Performance Bonus Final hourly rate to be determined after the interview, based on experience. Performance bonuses are also provided.
Qualifications:
Qualifications:
Proven experience as an HDD Locator, Drill Crew Foreman, or in a similar underground utility construction role. Experience with Vermeer 20x22 and Ditch Witch JT20 directional drill systems. Experience operating Subsite locating systems and underground tracking equipment. Strong ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, utility locates, and job specifications. Solid understanding of underground utility installations, HDD procedures, bore planning, and drilling techniques. Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with drill operators, crews, and project teams. Understanding of safety practices, including OSHA standards and utility damage prevention regulations. Physical ability to walk bore paths and work outdoors in varying field conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
Drill Path Planning & Coordination:
Ensure the drill follows the correct path and depth for the installation of utilities, as specified by project plans. Confirm the bore path with the drilling operator and conduct a pre-drill walkthrough to identify any potential challenges or obstacles. Assure all utilities in the construction path are located and potholes are dug to expose underground utilities before drilling begins. Ensure bore log on a daily basis.
Utility Avoidance & Safety:
Use tracking equipment to monitor the drill bit's position, ensuring it avoids existing underground utilities, such as conduits, water lines, gas lines, and other hazards. Maintain proper clearances to ensure the safe installation of products according to standards. Record the depth of the drill head at least every 10 feet (or more frequently as necessary) to ensure accuracy.
Job Site Monitoring & Reporting:
Ensure that the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product seamlessly. Conduct post-job quality checks and ensure the job site is clean and restored to an acceptable condition after project completion. Maintain detailed records of work performed, equipment used, and any issues encountered during the locate process. Report daily production progress to the project manager or supervisor.
Collaboration & Problem-Solving:
Collaborate with the drill operator, crew members, supervisors, and project managers to communicate progress, challenges, and potential solutions during the drilling process. Advise crew members of on-site challenges such as rocky terrain or unexpected obstacles that could impact the HDD project's scope.
Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies to prevent accidents and injuries on the job site. Maintain a Safety-First mentality, ensuring that PPE is worn throughout the workday. Stay current on safety policies, procedures, and OSHA compliance regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
Process Improvement & Efficiency:
Seek opportunities for process improvements that could enhance the efficiency, safety, and overall outcomes of HDD projects. Suggest modifications and adjustments to procedures when necessary to optimize project execution.
Additional Duties:
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to assist in the successful completion of HDD projects.
Work Environment:
Outdoor job sites, often in varying weather conditions. Physical demands, including walking bore paths, lifting equipment, and working near potentially hazardous underground utilities.
