This position requires a high level of technical skill, attention to safety, and the ability to lead and communicate effectively within a crew. Drill Operators play a key role in maintaining production standards, equipment maintenance, and overall job site performance. Core Responsibilities Operate directional drilling and locating equipment (Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or equivalent) to complete planned bore paths. Conduct pre-job site inspections and ensure all utilities are properly located and potholed before drilling. Navigate and drill around existing utilities, water lines, and other subsurface structures safely. Perform daily equipment inspections and preventative maintenance on the drill, truck, and support trailer. Follow all manufacturer safety guidelines and industry best practices. Lead setup and teardown of job sites, including signage, cones, and barricades. Direct and mentor crew members in bore gel mixing, equipment setup, and conduit placement. Maintain accurate daily production logs and as-built documentation. Drive and transport the drill and support equipment to and from job sites. Keep equipment and vehicles clean, organized, and well maintained. Required Qualifications & Experience Valid driver's license ( CDL A with Tanker Endorsement required ). 1+ year of experience operating directional drilling or locating equipment. Proven knowledge of underground construction safety procedures and locate compliance laws. Ability to read and interpret job prints, bore maps, and route plans. Willingness to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment. Preferred Experience Experience with both Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment models. Familiarity with utility construction standards, bore fluids, and restoration processes. Strong communication and leadership abilities within a field crew. Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for field-based issues. Physical Demands & Competencies Regular lifting of 50-75 lbs., frequent bending, stooping, and repetitive physical tasks. Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions. Manual dexterity and coordination for safe equipment operation. Demonstrates dependability, safety focus, and team leadership. Work Environment This position operates in outdoor field conditions year-round, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, and snow. Work sites may involve mud, uneven terrain, live utilities, and moving traffic. Proper PPE and adherence to safety protocols are mandatory at all times. Work Schedule Full-time, non-exempt position. Typical schedule is Monday-Friday, with occasional evenings, weekends, or night work as required by project demands. Regular attendance and flexibility are essential.
Training & Development Expectations New Hire Development:
Complete Universal Services safety, CDL, and equipment operation training modules within the first 90 days. Demonstrate proficiency in bore planning, locating, and drilling procedures. Maintain accurate daily records and communicate effectively with crew and supervisors.
Ongoing Development:
Participate in ongoing safety, equipment maintenance, and leadership training. Cross-train as a locator and mentor new operators. Continue developing leadership and coordination skills in preparation for advancement to Foreman.
