The exact duties vary by sector — construction, mining, oil & gas support, environmental services, geothermal energy, or geotechnical investigation — but the core responsibilities usually include: Core Responsibilities Operating drilling rigs and associated machinery safely and efficiently Setting up, inspecting, and dismantling drilling equipment at job sites Drilling boreholes for: soil sampling rock coring groundwater monitoring Reading drilling plans, site maps, and technical specifications Monitoring drilling conditions and adjusting pressure, speed, and drilling methods Following environmental, safety, and regulatory procedures Coordinating with engineers, geologists, site supervisors, and labor crews Transporting equipment and ensuring proper site cleanup Safety Responsibilities A major part of the role involves safety compliance, including: Conducting pre-operation inspections Identifying underground hazards and utilities Using PPE properly Following confined space and heavy-equipment procedures Preventing spills and environmental contamination Securing drill sites and maintaining safe work zones Technical Tasks Depending on the employer, operators may also: Install monitoring wells or casing Operate mud rotary, auger, sonic, or core drilling systems Use GPS and digital logging systems Mix drilling fluids or grout Interpret basic geological formations during drilling Troubleshoot hydraulic or mechanical issues Typical Skills Required Heavy equipment operation Mechanical troubleshooting Attention to detail Safety awareness Ability to work outdoors in varying weather Team communication Basic geology or drilling knowledge
