Construction and Maintenance :

Groundhands support linemen in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power lines. This includes tasks such as digging holes, setting up poles, and preparing job sites. 2

Operating Equipment :

They may operate various machinery and tools, including chain saws, brush chippers, and light utility vehicles, to assist in construction and maintenance tasks. 2

Site Preparation and Cleanup :

Groundhands are responsible for preparing sites by clearing obstructions, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring safety protocols are followed during operations.

Material Handling :

They assist in loading and unloading materials, stocking trucks with necessary supplies, and ensuring that linemen have the tools and equipment they need readily available.

Safety Compliance :

Groundhands must adhere to safety regulations and protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and understanding safety rules related to electrical work.

Required Skills and Qualifications Physical Stamina :

The role requires physical strength and the ability to lift heavy equipment regularly.

Mechanical Skills :

Knowledge of operating various machinery and tools is essential for performing daily tasks.

Teamwork and Communication :

Groundhands must work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with crew members.

Basic Electrical Knowledge :

While not working on live lines, a basic understanding of electrical systems is beneficial. 1

High School Diploma :

A minimum educational requirement is typically a high school diploma, with additional training or apprenticeship preferred. Working out of town/State Work Environment Groundhands often work outdoors in various weather conditions and may be required to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, depending on project needs. This entry-level position offers opportunities for advancement into more skilled roles, such as Apprentice Lineman or Journeyman Lineman, with on-the-job training provided.
