Job Description

DEFINITION
Perform complex and difficult work related to maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and meters; monitor and evaluate the installation of electrical equipment and meters; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Superintendent of Electric Distribution, Superintendent of Electric Generation or Director of Electric Services. Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
— Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following
Essential Functions:
Perform a variety of skilled tasks associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and meters including traffic signals, light fixtures, electrical malfunctions of control panels, relays and high voltage breakers. Respond to service calls concerning electrical problems; investigates complaints Perform regular testing of equipment and machinery to maintain quality assurance and high performance. Perform a variety of skilled tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment at all City facilities,. Use and operate a bucket truck, winch truck, drill motors and other equipment needed for maintaining and repairing electrical equipment.
Marginal Functions:
Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required. Communicate and coordinate work with private agencies; communicate with other local, regional, state and federal government agencies to develop effective working relationships; establish cooperative efforts among other agencies. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
Modern and complex principles and practices of electrical maintenance repair. Methods, materials, techniques and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment. Recent developments, current literature and sources of information regarding electrical equipment. Operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned. Basic mathematical calculations. Basic principals and procedures of record keeping. Methods and techniques of report preparation. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations.
Ability to:
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Interpret and explain departmental policies and procedures. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Follow all safety regulations of the Electric Utility Department. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
  • walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • lifting and/or carrying heavy to moderate objects
  • travel to various work locations
  • climbing ladders and electrical poles
  • bending, stooping or kneeling for extended periods of time
  • conducting inspections Ability to: Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
  • making observations
  • communicating with others
  • evaluating status of vehicles and equipment
  • operate assigned vehicle and equipment
  • answering questions
  • speaking in a clear and audible voice\
  • traveling to various work locations
  • evaluating the performance of mechanical and electrical machinery and hand tools
  • monitoring assigned activities and operations Maintain mental capacity which permits:
  • Making sound decisions and using good judgment
  • prioritizing work activities
  • estimating time and materials needed for projects
  • respond to questions Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Five years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of commercial and industrial electrical equipment.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. License or Certificate Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid C.P.R Certificate. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid First Aid Certificate. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Kansas driver's license. Possession of an appropriate, valid Journeyman Electrician Certificate.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
Travel from site to site; inclement weather conditions; exposure to high voltage, electrical energy; work at heights on scaffolding and/or ladders.
Physical Condition:
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time; ability to distinguish color; general manual dexterity; heavy or moderate lifting and carrying; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
