The Estimator plays a vital role in supporting Alvah Contracting's success by developing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive bids for PG&E Transmission, Distribution, and Substation projects. This position is responsible for reviewing project documentation, performing detailed takeoffs, analyzing costs, and assembling complete proposals that align with technical requirements and construction best practices. Working closely with internal teams, suppliers, subcontractors, and PG&E personnel, the Estimator ensures all project risks, scope details, and cost factors are thoroughly evaluated to support profitable project execution.
Responsibilities:
Review proposal specifications, drawings, and attend pre-bid meetings & job walks Estimating medium to large projects for Transmission, Distribution and Substations. Request and analyze pricing from subcontractors and material suppliers. Interface with PG&E personal on regular basis. Prepare estimates by performing takeoffs, developing construction approach, and calculating projected costs. Coordinate total estimating effort with proposal team. Review and analyze historical data from past projects. Review estimates with operations. Present and participate in bid strategy meetings. Prepare technical proposals by working with the team to translate the construction process and plan of construction into a professional presentation. Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates. Identify and mitigate risks associated with projects. Facilitate contract handoff to PM and Operations team. Follow awarded contracts - analyze actual costs and adjust future estimates.
Qualifications:
BS Degree in Construction Management, Engineering or related field is preferred. Minimum 5+ years' of combined experience - Power Estimating, Project Managing, or field experience in outside power construction required. Experience in estimating mid-scale projects and advance knowledge of construction and utility practices. Knowledge of estimating techniques, cost control and general profit/loss terms. Proficient in computerized bidding software. Proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Able to travel to job locations to assist in confirming project site conditions. Ability to work in a team environment. Excellent communication skills including verbal, written and presentation. Problem solving, time management and organizational skills required.
