Job Description

1. Roles A Staff Estimator for the estimating department must combine technical knowledge in mechanical systems, proficiency in digital estimating tools, and strong desire for growth. The individual that fulfills this role should be able to learn from senior estimators through adoption of department standards and practices, knowledge of department requirements and development of vital skills is a necessity for this team member. 2. Technical Responsibilities 2.1.
Blueprint Reading & Interpretation:
Proficiently read and interpret technical documents, schematics, blueprints, and specifications to determine the precise scope of work. 2.2.
System Knowledge:
Deep understanding of HVAC equipment (roof-top units, boilers, chillers), ductwork fabrication, plumbing systems (piping, fixtures), and electrical components. 2.3.
Material & Labor Takeoffs:
Accurately quantify materials and labor hours from drawings. 2.4.
Load Calculations:
Ability to perform or verify heat load calculations to size equipment correctly. 2.5.
Code Compliance:
Familiarity with local, state, and national plumbing and HVAC codes. 2.6.
Service & Retrofit Understanding:
Knowledge of repair, maintenance, and system replacements, not just new construction. 3. Core Areas of Competency 3.1.
Mathematical Proficiency:
Strong skills in algebra, geometry, and basic statistics to calculate volumes, areas, and equipment capacities. 3.2.
Cost Analysis & Estimation:
Ability to calculate, analyze, and forecast total project costs, including material, labor, and overhead. 3.3.
Value Engineering:
Identifying alternative materials or, methods to reduce costs without compromising quality. 3.4.
Risk Management:
Identifying potential project risks, such as supply chain delays or site-specific challenges, and factoring in contingencies. 4. Soft Skills 4.1.
Detailed Documentation:
High attention to detail to ensure accuracy in, proposals and to avoid costly errors. 4.2.
Vendor/Supplier Relations:
Ability to build relationships with suppliers to obtain current pricing. 4.3.
Communication Skills:
Clearly explaining, cost assumptions,, and, technical details to clients, project managers, and technicians. 4.4.
Time Management & Multitasking:
Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet strict deadlines. 4.5.
Problem-Solving:
Developing creative, solutions to unusual, installation or repair challenges. 5. Skills 5.1.
Software Proficiencies:
5.1.1. Microsoft Office Products Highly Skilled (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project) 5.1.2. AutoCAD / Revit Highly Skilled 5.1.3. Bluebeam Highly Skilled 5.1.4. Expertise in industry-standard estimating software (i.e. Trimble, Wendes, AutoBid, etc.) 6. Minimum Qualifications 6.1. Experience - 3-5+ Years of Experience in Mechanical Engineering and/or Estimating for Plumbing, HVAC Sheetmetal, Pipefitting and HVAC equipment projects with a strong background in commercial/industrial construction or a combination of field experience as a Journeyman and estimating. 6.2. Education - A high school diploma is required, with a preference for a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, construction management, or a related field. Heavy experience as a Journeyman in a mechanical trade is acceptable.
