- Detroit, MI Our client is a growing specialty contractor and fabrication organization serving commercial, industrial, institutional, and infrastructure markets throughout the United States.
The company specializes in custom fabricated metal systems and complex construction projects requiring close collaboration between estimating, engineering, production, and project teams. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a Senior Metals Estimator to lead estimating efforts for design-build, design-assist, and plan-specification projects. This position will be responsible for developing conceptual budgets, detailed cost estimates, and competitive bid proposals for architectural metals, structural steel, stairs, railings, and other fabricated metal systems.
Responsibilities:
Lead full-scope estimates for design-build and plan-specification metal fabrication and construction projects Develop conceptual budgets and preliminary pricing during design-assist phases Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and BIM models Build labor, material, equipment, fabrication, and subcontractor cost models Evaluate fabrication methods, production requirements, and labor drivers to develop accurate estimates Present and communicate bid proposals, assumptions, exclusions, and pricing rationale to internal stakeholders and project teams Collaborate with engineering and production teams regarding constructability, fabrication methods, and system design Identify value engineering opportunities during project development Participate in bid strategy reviews and final pricing decisions Maintain estimating templates, historical cost databases, and pricing resources Support and mentor junior estimating personnel as needed Manage multiple estimates and proposal deadlines simultaneously while maintaining accuracy
Qualifications:
7+ years of estimating experience within metal fabrication, architectural metals, structural steel, miscellaneous metals, stair systems, railing systems, or closely related specialty trades Direct experience estimating design-build and/or design-assist construction projects Strong understanding of architectural metals, miscellaneous metals, and/or structural steel systems Proven ability to develop conceptual budgets and pricing before construction documents are fully complete Deep knowledge of fabrication processes, shop operations, production workflows, and labor drivers Advanced Microsoft Excel and spreadsheet-based estimating capabilities Experience performing quantity takeoffs from construction drawings, specifications, and BIM models Ability to manage multiple estimates under deadline-driven environments
Compensation:
Base salary in the 90k
