Job Description

Our client is a growing General Contractor with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality construction projects across multiple sectors, including healthcare, commercial, institutional, office, retail, education, and interior fit-outs. They are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Estimator to join their team in Sayreville, NJ. Position Overview The Axel Group is seeking a sharp, organized, and experienced Estimator to support all phases of preconstruction and estimating. This individual will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates, reviewing drawings and bid documents, soliciting subcontractor and vendor pricing, performing quantity takeoffs, and working closely with project management, field operations, subcontractors, and clients. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in commercial construction estimating, the ability to manage multiple bids at once, and a solid understanding of construction methods, materials, scopes, and sequencing. This role is best suited for someone who is detail-driven, communicative, and comfortable working in a fast-paced general contracting environment. Key Responsibilities Prepare detailed conceptual, schematic, design development, and final construction estimates. Review drawings, specifications, bid documents, and project requirements to determine full scope of work. Perform quantity takeoffs and develop pricing for labor, materials, equipment, and general conditions. Solicit, review, and evaluate subcontractor and vendor pricing to ensure complete bid coverage. Participate in bid leveling, scope reviews, and proposal preparation. Analyze project risks, constructability concerns, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving options. Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, architects, engineers, ownership teams, and subcontractors throughout preconstruction. Maintain and update subcontractor/vendor relationships, bid lists, and estimating databases. Assist with budgeting, procurement planning, and change order pricing as needed. Attend pre-bid meetings, site walks, and client meetings when required. Support the continued improvement of estimating systems, historical cost tracking, and internal bid processes. Skills and Qualifications 2+ years of estimating experience within commercial construction or general contracting. Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field is preferred. Experience estimating projects across sectors such as healthcare, commercial, institutional, office, retail, education, hospitality, renovations, or interior fit-outs. Strong ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and bid documents. Experience with quantity takeoffs, subcontractor solicitation, bid leveling, and proposal preparation. Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, scheduling, sequencing, and general conditions. Proficiency with estimating software, takeoff platforms, and Microsoft Office. Experience with BuildingConnected, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar platforms is a plus. Strong communication, negotiation, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple estimates, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously. Preferred Experience Ground-up commercial construction experience. Renovation and interior fit-out estimating experience. Exposure to hard bids, negotiated work, and GMP projects. Healthcare, institutional, or occupied-space construction experience is a plus. Experience collaborating with project management and field teams during preconstruction and design-assist phases. Why Join?
