Pierson Construction Co. Richard E. Pierson Construction Co. is a leading heavy civil and heavy highway contractor specializing in roadway construction, bridge work, site development, utility installation, paving, earthwork, and infrastructure projects throughout the region. We are seeking an experienced Estimator to join our preconstruction team and play a critical role in securing and delivering complex transportation and civil construction projects. Position Summary The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy highway and heavy civil construction projects. This position requires a strong understanding of construction means and methods, production rates, labor and equipment costs, subcontractor management, and public bid procurement processes. The ideal candidate will have experience estimating projects involving roadway construction, excavation, grading, drainage, utilities, paving, structures, bridges, and other infrastructure-related work. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Analyze plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents to develop comprehensive project estimates. Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, utilities, concrete, asphalt paving, structures, drainage, and miscellaneous civil work. Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations. Develop labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor pricing. Prepare bid proposals and supporting documentation for public and private projects. Identify project risks, constructability concerns, and value engineering opportunities. Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs. Coordinate with operations personnel to develop realistic production rates and construction approaches. Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, owners, and industry partners. Assist with budgeting, cost forecasting, and project handoff to operations teams following award. Maintain current knowledge of market conditions, material pricing, labor costs, and industry trends. Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and company leadership during the bidding process. Support multiple bids simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines. Qualifications Required Minimum 5 years of estimating experience in heavy highway, heavy civil, transportation, or infrastructure construction.
Strong knowledge of:
Roadway and highway construction, Earthwork and mass excavation, Site development, Utility installation, Drainage systems, Asphalt paving, Concrete construction, Bridge and structural work Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents. Experience preparing quantity takeoffs and detailed cost estimates. Understanding of construction equipment capabilities, production rates, and means and methods. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed. Preferred 10+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction. Experience estimating DOT, county, municipal, and federally funded projects. Familiarity with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, B2W, Bid2Win, AGTEK, Bluebeam, or similar platforms. Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field. Knowledge of NJDOT specifications and bidding procedures.
