Job Description

Structural Steel Estimator Location:
Dickinson, TX Salary:
$60,000 - $85,000 (Based on Experience)
Job Summary:
The Structural Steel Estimator is responsible for accurately estimating the cost of structural steel projects. This includes reviewing project specifications, drawings, and other relevant documents to determine material, labor, and equipment requirements. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a thorough understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection processes, and proficiency in AutoCAD and EJE estimating software.
Responsibilities:
Material Takeoffs Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from structural and architectural drawings Identify all required materials including beams, plate, tubing, bolts, and misc. metals Verify scope completeness and identify missing or unclear information Cost Estimating Develop labor estimates based on shop processes and historical data Assist in pricing materials, subcontractors, and outside services (e.g., galvanizing, trucking) Build accurate cost breakdowns for each project Bid Preparation Assist in preparing bid proposals and supporting documentation Organize estimate details for review by the Estimating Manager Ensure bids are complete, clear, and submitted on time Drawing & Specification Review Review project drawings and specifications to understand scope and requirements Identify potential risks, complexities, or cost drivers Raise questions or clarifications to the Estimating Manager Coordination & Communication Work closely with Estimating Manager (direction, review, strategy), Sales/Business Development (bid opportunities), and Production team (labor assumptions and constructability input) Communicate issues, discrepancies, or concerns early Data & System Management Maintain organized estimate files and documentation Enter data into estimating or ERP systems Track historical cost data to support future estimates Continuous Improvement Learn from awarded projects by comparing estimated vs. actual costs Improve accuracy of takeoffs and labor assumptions over time Stay current on steel pricing, fabrication methods, and industry trends.
Qualifications:
2-5 years of experience in estimating, steel fabrication, or construction. Proficiency in AutoCAD is required. Proficiency in EJE estimating software is preferred. Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection processes. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational and time management skills.
