Relay Panel Estimator

Relay Panel Estimator Phasr Industries We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Protection and Control Panel Estimator to join our panel fabrication shop. The primary role is to prepare accurate, competitive, and profitable cost estimates for custom protection and control panels, relay panels, marshalling cabinets, and associated electrical/control assemblies. You will analyze customer specifications, one-line diagrams, schematics, bill of materials (BOM), and scope documents to develop comprehensive bids for utility substations, industrial automation, power generation, renewable energy, and transmission & distribution projects. Key Responsibilities

• Review and interpret customer RFQ packages, including electrical drawings (one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts), specifications, scope of work, and project schedules.
• Perform detailed material take-offs for panel components such as relays (electromechanical/digital/multifunction), meters, transducers, PLCs/RTUs, terminal blocks, power supplies, annunciators, test switches, wire, raceways, enclosures, and labeling systems.
• Estimate labor hours for panel design modifications, component mounting, wiring, point-to-point checkout, functional testing, FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), documentation, and packaging/shipping.
• Research and apply current pricing for electrical/control components from vendors (e.g., SEL, GE, Siemens, Schneider, Littelfuse, Eaton, Phoenix Contact, etc.), factoring in lead times, market fluctuations, and quantity discounts.
• Calculate overhead, burden rates, shop fabrication efficiencies, profit margins, and risk contingencies to produce complete, bottom-up cost estimates.
• Identify value engineering opportunities, scope clarifications, and potential alternates to improve competitiveness without compromising quality or compliance.
• Prepare clear, professional bid proposals, cost breakdowns, and scope narratives for submission to customers (utilities, EPC firms, contractors).
• Collaborate with engineering, project management, procurement, and shop production teams to refine estimates and resolve technical questions.
• Support post-bid activities, including scope negotiations, change order estimating, and cost tracking for awarded projects.
• Maintain and update estimating databases, templates, historical cost data, and labor productivity metrics for continuous improvement.
• Stay current with industry standards (IEEE, NEC, UL, NEMA), emerging technologies in protection & control, and material price trends. Preferred Qualifications
• 1-5+ years of experience in electrical estimating, preferably focused on protection & control panels, relay panels, industrial control panels, or substation equipment.
• Strong understanding of protective relaying schemes (overcurrent, distance, differential, transformer, bus, breaker failure, etc.), SCADA/RTU integration, interlocking, and automation controls.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical/control drawings (AutoCAD, EPLAN, or similar), panel GA layouts, and wiring diagrams.
• Experience with estimating software/tools (e.g., Accubid, ConEst, Bluebeam, Excel advanced functions, or custom panel shop databases).
• Knowledge of panel shop manufacturing processes, UL 508A/698A listing requirements, wire sizing/termination standards, and testing protocols.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc)
• Familiarity with PDF editing
• Familiarity with common industry components and suppliers in the protection & control space.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field.
• Background in utility substation design, industrial automation, or electrical contracting.
• Experience with protective relay programming/configuration or testing (a plus, not required).
• Previous work in a panel fabrication shop or as a panel builder/wireman transitioning to estimating. Skills & Competencies
