Heavy Civil Highway Estimator Location:
Sterling, VA A well-established heavy civil construction contractor is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Highway Estimator to join its growing team in Sterling, Virginia. This position is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for highway, roadway, bridge, paving, utility, and site development projects throughout the region. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, extensive knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, and the ability to develop detailed cost estimates that support successful project bidding and execution. Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare complete cost estimates for heavy highway, roadway, bridge, utility, grading, and infrastructure projects
  • Review plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents to determine project requirements
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and develop detailed pricing for labor, equipment, materials, and subcontracted work
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations
  • Identify project risks and opportunities and incorporate findings into bid strategies
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as required
  • Collaborate with project managers, operations teams, and senior leadership during bid preparation
  • Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and clients
  • Prepare bid packages and ensure proposals are submitted accurately and on time
  • Assist with budgeting, value engineering, and project handoff activities after award
  • Maintain knowledge of market conditions, material pricing, labor rates, and industry trends Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred
  • 5+ years of estimating experience within heavy civil, highway, transportation, or infrastructure construction
  • Experience estimating roadway, paving, bridge, utility, earthwork, and site development projects
  • Strong understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents
  • Experience with estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with VDOT, municipal, or federal transportation projects
  • Knowledge of HCSS HeavyBid, B2W, AGTEK, Bluebeam, or similar estimating software
  • Familiarity with design-build and alternative delivery methods What's In It For You
