This is a critical finishing role — you'll be the last set of hands on every assembly before it ships, ensuring steel is clean, properly marked, and ready for paint or coating. RESPONSIBILITIES
Grind, chip, and wire brush weld spatter, slag, and surface contamination from fabricated steel assemblies Use angle grinders, flap discs, wire wheels, and needle scalers to clean and finish welds to specification Remove burrs, sharp edges, and rough cuts from torch-cut and saw-cut steel surfaces Verify piece marks, heat numbers, and assembly identifications match shop travelers and shipping lists Apply paint markers, stencils, or stamps to identify assemblies per shop and customer requirements Prep metal for galvanizing Inspect finished assemblies for obvious visual defects and flag issues to lead fabricator or QC Assist with shop layout — organizing, staging, and moving steel using forklift (training provided) Load and stage completed assemblies for shipping in coordination with the shipping/receiving team Sweep, organize, and maintain a clean, safe shop floor throughout and at end of each shift Support fabricators and welders with material handling, setup, and other production tasks as directed Maintain inventory on shop supplies and order lists for foreman
QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience in a metal fabrication, manufacturing, or industrial environment preferred but not required Comfortable operating angle grinders and hand tools — experience a plus Ability to read basic shop travelers and piece mark tags Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to take direction and learn Ability to work efficiently and keep pace in a high-volume production environment Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand/move for the duration of a full shift Overhead crane and/or forklift certification a plus — training and certification available Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen

WHY JOIN US
This role is more than clean-up — it's where you learn how a structural steel shop runs from the inside out. We have a strong track record of moving motivated detailers into fabricator and operator roles as skills develop. If you show up, work hard, and pay attention, there's a clear path forward here. We're a well-established Bay Area shop with steady work, a solid crew, and projects you'll see built across the region.
