A shipfitter for ship repair specializes in removing, repairing, and replacing damaged, corroded, or modified structural components on existing vessels. The ideal candidate will be responsible for fabricating, assembling, and repairing ship components using a variety of tools and techniques. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical systems, welding, and sheet metal work, with an emphasis on safety, precision, and quality. Prior experience in service technician roles, military backgrounds, or electrical and mechanical maintenance is highly valued. The Shipfitter will play a crucial role in ensuring the structural integrity and functionality of vessels through expert fabrication and assembly processes. Responsibilities Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings to accurately fabricate and assemble ship components. Perform welding, soldering, and cutting using power tools, hand tools, and fabrication equipment to meet project specifications. Conduct heavy lifting and rigging operations to move large ship parts safely within the work area. Utilize precision measuring instruments such as calipers and ohmmeters to ensure components meet exact dimensions and electrical standards. Apply mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot issues related to ship structures, including sheet metal work and fabrication repairs. Use electrical experience for wiring, soldering, or maintaining electrical systems on ships when required. Maintain safety standards by adhering to protocols during heavy lifting, welding, cutting, and assembly tasks. Support maintenance activities including vehicle maintenance or other mechanical repairs as needed. Collaborate with team members to complete projects efficiently while ensuring high-quality workmanship. Assist in customer service interactions when applicable by providing technical support or project updates. Skills Must be able to use oxyacetylene torch Proven experience as a service technician or mechanic with a focus on fabrication or repair work. Strong knowledge of schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings specific to shipbuilding or repair environments. Electrical experience including wiring, soldering, and troubleshooting electrical systems using tools like ohmmeters. Skilled in rigging, assembly, welding (including MIG/TIG), sheet metal work, and fabrication techniques. Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, calipers, precision measuring instruments, and maintenance equipment. Ability to perform heavy lifting safely while maintaining attention to detail during complex tasks. Customer service skills for effective communication with clients or team members regarding project status or technical issues. Knowledge of vehicle maintenance or general mechanical systems is beneficial for versatile job performance.
