Job Title:
Journeyman Welder - Structural Steel & Bridge Fabrication Job Description This role focuses on high-precision structural welding and fitting for complex steel and bridge projects. You will interpret detailed blueprints, lay out and fit large structural components, and perform code-compliant welds while working closely with an experienced fabrication team in a large, modern steel facility. Responsibilities Perform structural welding, layout, and fitting of structural steel components and bridge girders with speed, accuracy, and minimal supervision. Interpret and understand complex blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications for structural steel and bridge projects. Identify steel shapes and accurately lay out and fit beams, columns, and girders, including weld sizes, piece marks, and direction marks. Use welding machines, grinders, cutting torches, overhead cranes, and measuring instruments to complete fitting and welding tasks safely and efficiently. Conduct thorough quality checks on completed work to verify accuracy, alignment, and compliance with project requirements and applicable codes. Collaborate closely with welders, fitters, fabricators, and project staff to meet project deadlines and production goals. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area, following all safety protocols, shop procedures, and regulatory requirements. Assist in troubleshooting and resolving fabrication and installation issues as they arise, offering practical solutions based on field experience. Perform welding in multiple positions as required for structural steel and bridge fabrication work. Apply and follow weld symbols correctly when laying out and executing welds on structural components. Essential Skills Proven experience as a Journeyman Fitter/Fabricator or Welder with a strong focus on structural steel and bridge projects. Demonstrated proficiency in structural welding processes, including MIG, flux core, and stick welding, with the ability to pass weld tests to
AWS D1.5
standards. Knowledgeable in AWS D1.1 and
AWS D1.5
codes, with the ability to perform welding in multiple positions to these standards. Strong layout and fitting skills for structural steel, including beams, columns, bridge girders, and related components. Advanced ability to read, interpret, and execute work from blueprints, fabrication drawings, and technical specifications. Ability to read and apply weld symbols accurately in daily work. Hands-on experience using cutting torches, overhead cranes, grinders, and standard measuring tools in a steel fabrication environment. Solid understanding of structural welding techniques and best practices for quality and safety. Effective communication skills and the ability to work productively within a team-oriented shop environment. High attention to detail and a strong commitment to producing precise, high-quality work. Physical stamina and the ability to work in a fabrication shop environment and in various weather conditions as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Certification in
AWS D1.1, AWS
D1.5, and/or
AWS D1.8
is a strong plus. Experience working on bridge projects, high-rise structures, industrial buildings, stadiums, or other complex structural steel projects. Background in both welding and fitting, including experience as a Fitter/Mechanic in structural steel fabrication.
