Job Description
NSC Staffing is actively seeking First Class Shipfitters in Newport News, VA, and Norfolk, VA. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a premier shipbuilding and ship repair team supporting large-scale naval and commercial vessel construction and repair projects. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience in structural shipfitting, blueprint reading, and multi-pass tack welding, along with a strong commitment to safety and quality craftsmanship. Responsibilities As an Shipfitter, you will: Lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install complex ship structures including shell plates, bulkheads, decks, and foundations. Interpret and work from blueprints, weld symbols, sketches, and ship reference lines. Perform multi-pass tack welding, oxy/propane burning, and heating torch operations as required. Align and fit steel components to tight tolerances in confined or elevated spaces. Use vibratory tools, air carbon arc gouging, and standard shop equipment. Assist in installing and replacing hull inserts, penetrations, and structural foundations. Maintain compliance with all OSHA, NAVSEA, and shipyard safety regulations. Required Experience & Skills Minimum 5 years commercial, marine or naval experience as a First Class Shipfitter Proficient in SMAW multi-pass tack welding (vertical & overhead) Skilled in blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation Familiar with datum lines, molded lines, and ship reference points Experienced with layout and fabrication of large structural components Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights Knowledge of

Shipyard Employment Standards Testing & Safety Requirements All candidates must: Pass the SMAW Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification Test (3F & 4F positions) upon arrival. Complete mandatory shipyard safety training, including: Confined Space & Hazard Communication Respirator Fit & Medical Clearance Fall Protection PPE & Hearing Conservation PPE Requirements White hard hat (Fiber Metal Type 1 Class C or MSA Skullgard Class A) Welding jacket, leather bib, and FR clothingANSI Z87
