Job Description
Job Description Overview The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (APLA) at Auburn University, a comprehensive land-grant and research institution, is seeking applicants for Visiting Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture. This is a one-year (nine month/two semester), non-tenure track position commencing in August 2027. The Auburn University Landscape Architecture Programs are research-informed and design-led, dedicated to training quality designers, addressing contemporary issues, and participating in critical landscape discourse. We offer both an undergraduate degree (BLA) and a graduate degree (MLA). Grounded in the state of Alabama, we focus attention on places where the richness, complexity, and messiness of landscape is prominently felt, including post-industrial cities, infrastructural landscapes, rural landscapes, and coasts. Our curriculum places special emphasis on the fundamentals of design process, fieldwork, landscape advocacy, research by design, and the role of landscape architecture in an expanded field of allied disciplines and concerns. At the end of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, students have the opportunity to work within the Alabama Lab, our design research lab. In addition to the BLA and MLA, our School also offers three allied degree programs: Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Interior Architecture, and Bachelor of Environmental Design. APLA resides in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction along with the McWhorter School of Building Science and the School of Industrial + Graphic Design. Opportunities for collaboration within the School, College, and broader University abound. We participate in a legacy of engaged public interest design work exemplified by our School's two off-campus centers: the Rural Studio (Hale County, Alabama) and the Urban Studio (Birmingham, Alabama). Responsibilities The Landscape Architecture Programs seek a candidate with a strong interest in teaching both design studios and seminar courses. Candidates should have the capacity to teach at least some portion of: a.) our core studio sequences (Studio I-IV and Workshop I-II in the BLA program; Studio I-IV in the MLA program) and b.) our core subject tracks (construction; dynamic systems; graphic studies; history, theory, and practice; plants). There may also be opportunities to teach elective seminars or advanced studios within the Alabama Lab. Regardless of the candidate's scholarly focus, responsibilities of the appointment include teaching, service, and research. The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to maintain an active scholarly program disseminated through appropriate disciplinary venues. APLA faculty engage in and are supported in a broad range of formats for research and creative work.
