Landscape Designer WFH & Field Position (Portland-metro and Vancouver, WA areas) Are you a landscape designer passionate about creating beautiful, edible, and ecologically functional landscapes? Noble Root is seeking a creative, self-directed designer to shape sustainable residential environments that support both people and planet. Our work goes beyond aesthetics—supporting pollinators, producing food, and creating outdoor environments tailored to how our clients live. Serving the Portland and Vancouver, WA region, we prioritize organic practices, client education, and a high-touch experience from design through installation. Role Summary The Landscape Designer leads residential projects from site analysis through installation, producing build-ready plans and guiding clients through a clear, confident, and educational design process. This role blends ecological design principles with practical constructability, with an emphasis on native, edible, and pollinator-supportive landscapes. Key Responsibilities Design & Documentation Develop residential landscape designs using Vectorworks, including base plans, hardscape layouts, and detailed planting plans Produce hand-drawn concept plans to communicate early design direction Translate concepts into accurate, build-ready construction documents Ensure all designs align with ecological principles, site conditions, and client goals Client Engagement & Field Consultations Conduct on-site design consultations, assess site conditions, and document Provide real-time plant recommendations and create sketches in the field Lead client presentations (primarily via video), explaining design intent, guiding decision-making, and educating about ecological and edible landscapes Incorporate client feedback while maintaining design integrity and project feasibility Maintain professional, timely communication across email, phone, and text Project Coordination & Execution Manage multiple design projects using Asana, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met Coordinate with installation teams to ensure designs are practical, accurate, and install-ready Support plant procurement and source specialty materials such as containers and trellises Assist during installations as needed to ensure design intent is executed correctly Planting Design & Horticulture Develop planting plans with strong knowledge of Pacific Northwest native plants, herbs, edibles, and pollinator-supportive species Identify existing vegetation including ornamentals, natives, and noxious weeds Contribute to and maintain internal plant databases and palettes Team Collaboration Provide and receive constructive design feedback across concept through final plans Collaborate with design and field teams to continuously improve quality and execution Qualifications Required Associate degree in Landscape Design, or related field (or equivalent experience) Proficiency in CAD design (Vectorworks preferred) Strong plant identification and horticultural knowledge, particularly in PNW ecosystems Ability to produce both hand-drawn and digital design work Strong verbal and written communication skills Highly organized with strong time management and attention to detail Core Competencies Design judgment balancing aesthetics, ecology, and constructability Ability to lead clients through decisions with clarity and professionalism Adaptability in integrating feedback while maintaining design quality Strong ownership of deadlines, priorities, and billable design time Preferred Experience with ecological design, permaculture, or habitat restoration Hands-on gardening or landscape installation experience Familiarity with 3D modeling or rendering tools Requirements Ability to manage design production schedules and meet project deadlines within budgeted design hours Reliable transportation and valid driver's license for site visits Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a remote environment Functional home office setup Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions as needed Compensation & Benefits $27-$32/hour DOE 3% employer match for retirement savings PTO and 8 paid holidays Medical insurance stipend ($250/month) Phone stipend and mileage reimbursement Flexible schedule and work-from-home Professional development and supportive, collaborative team environment Paid volunteerism and purpose-driven work culture (proud member of 1% for the Planet) Meaningful involvement in sustainable, edible, and ecological landscaping projects How to Apply Send your cover letter, resume, and portfolio examples.
