Wednesday SUMMARY:

The Yard Hostler spots trailers on any Mile Hi yard or to any Mile Hi dock. This position is responsible for timely and accurate movement of trailers, maintenance of reefer settings, and proper adherence to out-of-service notifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operate equipment using safe and proper work techniques. Monitor reefer settings, fuel levels and proper operation for equipment in the yard. Coordinate tractor and trailer maintenance with Dispatch and the Shop. Ensure trailer moves are scheduled as planned, in event of absence or warehouse delays. Monitor traffic of outside carriers on the lot. Provides back-up for distribution or shuttle runs as needed. Other duties as directed by Dispatcher or Transportation Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School education required. Must have a clear driving record.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Must be able to work multiple tasks while ensuring trailers are not moved from docks until approved. Adjusts to fluctuations in workloads and communicates with dispatch and warehouse management.

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS

Ability to communicate and work well with personnel at all levels within the organization. This individual must be able to maintain positive relations with customers and co-workers, including during challenging communication. This individual must be able to communicate job-related issues via hand-held communication device in English.

PHYSICAL NEEDS

This individual must be able to enter and exit yard dog in a safe manner. This individual must be able to safely work in heat, cold, wet and ice and snow-packed conditions. When functioning as a distribution driver, must be able to off load from 200 to 600 cases of product weighting from 10 lbs. to 50 lbs. Over curbs, up and down thresholds, through doorways with the potential presence of store customers. Must be able to enter and exit tractor and trailer in a safe manner by use of handholds and footholds 6 - 15 times over an 8 to 14 hour shift. Must be able to enter and exit trailer through side and rear doors at an elevation of approximately 4' by use of bumper, handholds and footholds, and or steps 6 to 15 times over an 8 to 14 hour shift. Must be able to lift a dock plate weighing up to 80lbs and maneuver it in and out of place 1 to 6 times per shift. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to be alert to traffic conditions. Must be able to bend, crouch, and kneel. Must be able to handle up to 70lbs on a repetitive basis. Must be able to push/pull loads on a two-wheeler or hand jack in excess of 70lbs.
