  • The Landfill Senior Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery at the landfill working face to support daily operations, including waste handling, site preparation, and general landfill maintenance.
This classification of operator may also be assigned to lead the dirt crew or other special project as assigned. This role requires advanced skills and experience in operating a broad range of equipment, such as bulldozers, loaders, excavators, compaction equipment, and haul trucks. The Senior Operator will ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation of equipment at the working face and around the site. The example of duties listed below fulfill the minimum requirements of this role. Other duties as relevantly apply to the position may be assigned. This is a "mandatory testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, wheel loaders, compactors, dump trucks, and other machinery, to perform tasks such as waste compaction, excavation, soil placement, and road maintenance Safely and efficiently moves materials and waste to designated areas within the landfill site, ensuring compliance with operational plans and environmental standards Performs complex tasks such as maintaining proper slopes and elevations, preparing sites for waste disposal, and onsite road building Conduct daily pre-operation inspections of equipment to include checking fluid levels, tire pressure, safety features, and basic mechanical components Reports any mechanical issues or malfunctions to the maintenance team, and assist with basic maintenance tasks as needed, such as refueling, cleaning, or greasing equipment Ensures that equipment is operated according to current safety and operational guidelines Follows safety protocols and adheres to landfill operating procedures to ensure the safety of yourself, coworkers, and the public Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and participate in regular safety meetings and training Ensures that all operations are conducted in accordance with environmental regulations, including proper waste handling and minimizing emissions Works closely with landfill supervisors and other operators to coordinate tasks and meet daily operational goals Mentors and assists less experienced staff, providing guidance on proper equipment operation and safety practices Assists with training new operators and demonstrate best practices for equipment usage and maintenance Assists in developing operators to improve the skillset of the overall team Monitors and adjusts equipment operations to maximize productivity, minimize fuel consumption, and reduce operational costs Maintains accurate records of work performed including equipment usage, cover material utilized, and any maintenance or inspection activities Coordinates with site managers and other staff to ensure smooth and efficient landfill operations, including the timely movement of materials and waste Assist customers as needed
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and at least one year of equipment operation or road construction experience, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Florida Driver's License Commercial Driver License preferred
Exception:
A licensed driver who lives in another state and travels regularly to work in Florida may maintain Operator's/Commercial Driver's license in state of residency. Landfill Operator's Certification within 6 months Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics (KSAO's) applicable medium and heavy equipment equipment maintenance and repair principles and practices occupational hazards and safe work methods performing preventive maintenance to applicable equipment preparing and maintaining a variety of records and logs customer service principles safe driving practices communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situations and is expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require the following: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work:
Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
