EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Starting Salary $33,100.08 JOB SUMMARY The Equipment Operator performs skilled work in the operation of moderately complex public works equipment. On specific assignments, employees are closely supervised; however, on routine assignments supervision is general in nature.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates tractors with front-end loader and backhoe, and other light equipment.
- Picks up, spots, and places materials where indicated by supervisor.
- Operates a motor vehicle, or pickup truck carrying fuel, lubricants and lubricating equipment, performs routine field lubrication of light, medium, and heavy rolling stock and equipment.
- Assists the road crew with raking, shoveling and flagging.
- Operates roller in patching County roads.
- Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use; and performs routine service and maintenance.
- Operates a dump truck, front end loader, excavator, bulldozer, bobcat and/ or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment; and participates generally in the labor work of the crew as workload demands.
- Performs routine service and maintenance mowing grounds, maintaining roads and performing site cleanup.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; and one (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy construction and automotive equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Special Qualifications:
None Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class "E" driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of medium and heavy automotive and similar public works equipment.
- Knowledge of the component parts, operating principles and maintenance needs of medium and light equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of medium and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and other regulations governing the operation of equipment on construction activities.
- Skill in the operation of moderately complex construction and transportation equipment.
- Ability to obtain necessary information and to complete accurate accident and other reports.
- Ability to operate equipment over rough terrain and to perform manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to service various types of relatively heavy equipment and to make minor running repairs.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. Mental acuity is required for making rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes. Visual ability is required to operate heavy equipment and perform activities specific to the job, such as viewing a computer terminal, observation of facilities or structures, and/or inspection involving small parts or operations of machines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, hazardous conditions, traffic and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Hardee County has the right to revise this job description at any time.
