Job Description
Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator - Road and Path Maintenance performs skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of roads, pathways, curbs, drainage features, and other paved surfaces throughout The Landings. This position serves as the team's primary equipment operator and requires proficiency in operating skid steers, front-end loaders, and related maintenance equipment. The role supports the community's infrastructure maintenance program through roadway patching, resurfacing, site preparation, drainage clearing, and other field maintenance activities. Organizational Relationships This position reports directly to the Construction Project Manager and works as part of a team of Public Works technicians. The role supports other departments and staff as needed on special projects or during periods of heavy maintenance activity. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Independently operates skid steers, front-end loaders, and related equipment to excavate, grade, load, backfill, and transport materials in support of road, curb, and drainage maintenance projects. Performs road and pathway maintenance work, including asphalt and concrete patching, curb repair, resurfacing support, and surface restoration. Inspects paved surfaces to identify potholes, cracking, settling, drainage issues, and other deficiencies requiring repair or replacement. Prepares work sites and road surfaces for maintenance activities by cutting, grading, sweeping, cleaning, and removing debris and unsuitable material. Assists with the placement, application, and finishing of asphalt, concrete, and other repair materials using hand tools, power tools, and equipment attachments. Supports drainage maintenance by cleaning storm drains, clearing ditches, and removing obstructions to promote proper stormwater flow and reduce roadway damage. Maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment in clean, safe, and serviceable condition and reports mechanical issues or repair needs promptly. Implements established safety practices, including use of personal protective equipment, traffic control devices, signage, cones, and flagging procedures in active work zones. Assists with special projects, emergency response, storm recovery, and other Public Works maintenance activities as assigned. Models TLA's values and serve as an ambassador of professionalism and integrity in all interactions. Works effectively with other departments to support organizational priorities, enhance communication flow, and contribute to overall organizational effectiveness. Seeks opportunities to continuously improve departmental operations and efficiencies through both individual and team contributions. Completes assigned tasks accurately and on time with minimal supervision, follows through on commitments, and take ownership of work responsibilities. Remains current on compliance training and required certifications. Practices safe work habits and immediately reports accidents, incidents, or near-misses. Responds promptly to help during operational emergencies, including natural disasters, severe weather events, or other urgent community needs. Key Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behavioral Characteristics Needed Knowledge of roadway, pathway, curb, and drainage maintenance methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in repair and surface restoration work. Ability to proficiently, safely and effectively operate skid steers, front-end loaders, and other light or heavy equipment used in infrastructure maintenance. Knowledge of asphalt and concrete patching, placement, finishing, and related roadway repair techniques. Knowledge of work zone safety practices, traffic control procedures, and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Ability to read and follow maps, work orders, basic plans, and written or verbal instructions. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity, quality, and attention to safety. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond effectively to changing field conditions and operational priorities. Ability to maintain basic records, complete assigned tasks accurately and on time, and care for tools, vehicles, and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition. Minimum Job requirements Minimum of 1-2 years of applicable work experience in road maintenance Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to be insured under TLA's vehicle insurance policy. Reliable and predictable attendance to ensure consistent support for departmental operations. Ability to meet physical requirements of the job as listed in the "Physical and Environmental Conditions" table below.
