Heavy Equipment Operator

Overview Join our dynamic team as a Heavy Equipment Operator and become a vital part of landfill operations. The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating landfill equipment in compliance with Iowa Department of Natural Resources (Iowa DNR) solid waste regulations, permit conditions, and the approved landfill operating plan. This position supports safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant landfill operations under the direction of the Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Landfill Operations:

Monday-Friday 7:30-3:30

• Operate landfill equipment including compactors, dozers, loaders, excavators, and other heavy machinery in accordance with the approved Iowa DNR operating plan.
• Perform waste placement, spreading, compaction, and application of daily and intermediate cover.
• Assist with cell development, slope maintenance, grading, and roadway construction.
• Support litter control, odor control, dust suppression, and vector control activities.
• Haul and monitor leachate Regulatory Compliance (Iowa DNR)
• Conduct landfill operations in compliance with Iowa Administrative Code (567 IAC) and landfill permit requirements.
• Follow waste screening and acceptance procedures and immediately report prohibited or unauthorized waste.
• Complete required daily operational logs, cover logs, and inspection checklists as directed.
• Assist with Iowa DNR inspections and corrective actions as instructed by the Director. Environmental Controls
• Assist with stormwater management, erosion control, and sediment control measures.
• Support leachate collection and management activities as applicable.
• Report environmental concerns such as spills, erosion, or unusual conditions immediately. Equipment Maintenance and Safety
• Perform daily equipment inspections and routine preventive maintenance.
• Report equipment defects, malfunctions, or safety hazards promptly.
• Comply with all RIWMA safety policies, OSHA requirements, and landfill safety procedures.
• Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Public and Hauler Interaction
• Interact professionally with landfill customers and waste haulers.
• Direct vehicles to designated unloading areas and enforce site traffic and safety rules.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
• Experience in landfill or solid waste operations preferred.
• Class A CDL with tanker endorsement preferred
• Valid Iowa driver's license required
• Ability to obtain and maintain Iowa DNR-required landfill operator training or certifications.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:

• Ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
• Ability to climb in and out of heavy equipment and work on uneven terrain.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Exposure to noise, dust, odors, and heavy equipment typical of landfill operations.
