Job Summary Join our dynamic Public Works team as a Public Works Worker, where you will play a vital role in maintaining and improving community infrastructure. Duties Operate heavy equipment including dozers, loaders, backhoes, graders, dump trucks, and front loader trucks to perform construction, grading, paving, and maintenance tasks. Assist with construction projects such as road repairs, sidewalk installations, and utility line placements. Conduct utility locating to identify underground utilities before excavation or construction activities. Maintain and repair public infrastructure by performing tasks like pothole patching, curb repairs, and drainage improvements. Support paving operations by preparing surfaces, spreading materials, and ensuring proper compaction. Perform routine inspections of equipment and work sites to ensure safety standards are met and work progresses efficiently. Collaborate with team members to complete project documentation and report on work progress or issues encountered during operations. Experience Prior experience operating heavy machinery such as dozers, loaders, backhoes, graders, or dump trucks is highly desirable. Construction site experience including roadwork, paving, or utility installation is preferred. Knowledge of construction safety protocols and utility locating techniques is a plus. Familiarity with Caterpillar (CAT) equipment or similar heavy machinery brands will be advantageous. Demonstrated ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions while maintaining safety and productivity standards. TRUCK DRIVER/LABORER - PUBLIC WORKS JOB DESCRIPTION
Nature of work : This is semi-skilled manual work in the operation of front-end loaders, backhoes, trucks and graders, and other related motorized equipment. Employee of this class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of loaders, graders, backhoes and trucks for a major portion of the work time. Duties may include the performance of manual labor tasks in connection with operation of the equipment and other functions of the Public Works Department. Work instructions may be received in detail for each job to be performed or may follow an established routine. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion by the Road Commissioner.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Examples of Work (Illustrative Only):- Performs varied work assignments using a front-end loader, road grader, backhoe and trucks, and related motorized equipment.
- Assists in the seasonal plowing and sanding of Town streets.
- Assists in the construction of new road surfaces and the maintenance of existing roads.
- Assists in the construction of new ditches, the cleaning of existing ditches and culverts, and the installation of new sewer lines.
- Assists in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicle equipment and the Town Garage.
- Assists in general related activities of the Public Works Department, including brush removal, equipment maintenance and general clean-up.
- Performs related work as required.
- Perform duties of the recycle truck driver when necessary.
Requirements of Work :
- Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of automotive vehicles.
- Knowledge of the geography of the Town, including the location of streets.
- Ability to operate trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes and other motorized equipment safely and according to traffic laws and regulations.
- Ability to make and assist in minor repairs and maintenance of motorized equipment.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse climatic conditions.
- Ability to carry out general instructions independently and follow more detailed instructions with some guidance.
- Ability to work weekends, nights, and holidays during snowstorms and other weather emergencies.
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of the class.
- Ability to pass routine drug tests.
Training and Experience Required :
High school graduation and considerable experience in the operation of heavy trucks and motorized equipment involved in construction or public works activities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Welding experience and/or training.Necessary Special Requirements :
Employee is required to have a valid and maintain a A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). and the employee shall be insurable under the Town's vehicle insurance coverage.Pay:
