Hoffman's is civil excavation company, specializing in cut/fill operations, site preparation, utility installation, foundations, asphalt paving and concrete finishing, for commercial, federal highway, state and county contracts. Competitive Pay/Prevailing Wage Health, Dental, Vision, AD&D Insurance Civil Excavation Operator - Job Description Position Overview A Civil Excavation Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment to perform earthwork and excavation activities in support of construction, site development, utility installation, grading, roadwork, and other civil projects for commercial, State, and Federal projects. This role requires strong equipment skills, attention to safety, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced outdoor environment. Key Responsibilities Equipment Operation Safely operate heavy machinery such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, dozers, and compactors. Perform digging, trenching, grading, sloping, and material moving activities. Excavate around utilities with precision and care. Load trucks with materials such as dirt, rock, and debris. Site Work Assist with site preparation, leveling, backfilling, and compaction. Read and follow grade stakes, blueprints, and project plans when required. Maintain clean, organized, and hazard‑free work areas. Work with ground crews to ensure accurate and efficient project progress. Safety & Maintenance Follow all OSHA and company safety protocols. Conduct daily equipment inspections and report issues immediately. Perform minor maintenance such as greasing, cleaning, and fluid checks. Maintain proper communication with spotters and crew members. Qualifications Required Proven experience operating heavy excavation equipment on civil construction projects. Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required depending on employer). Ability to read grade marks and follow instructions. Strong understanding of trench safety, slopes, and excavation best practices. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Preferred Experience with underground utility installation. GPS machine control familiarity. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. Mechanical aptitude for equipment troubleshooting. Montana DOT Project Experience Soft Skills Strong communication and teamwork skills. High attention to detail and situational awareness. Ability to work independently without direct supervision. Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to sit or operate machinery for extended periods. Ability to climb on/off equipment safely. Typical Work Environment Outdoor construction sites (residential, commercial, civil). Exposure to noise, dirt, heavy machinery, and changing weather.
