About the Role The Stormwater Equipment Operator performs skilled and advanced work operating a variety of light, medium, and heavy construction equipment in support of the Town's stormwater infrastructure and maintenance operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining and improving stormwater systems, ensuring safe and efficient drainage throughout the community. This role is primarily responsible for operating the Town's street sweeper on assigned routes, while also supporting construction and maintenance activities related to stormwater collection and detention systems. The position works as part of a crew to install, repair, and maintain storm drains, swales, and ditches, and may assist with inspections using specialized equipment. The Stormwater Equipment Operator must demonstrate a high level of skill and safety awareness while working in traffic, confined spaces, and around underground utilities. The role includes performing preventative maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment and may involve after-hours call-back. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for quality, safety, and adherence to standards. Operate heavy equipment including loaders, backhoes, track loaders, track hoes, and skid steers for construction and maintenance activities Operate street sweeper on designated routes as the primary responsibility of the position Excavate and remove asphalt, sidewalks, curb and gutter sections for stormwater system repairs Dig trenches, install culverts, and load/unload construction materials Operate sewer camera equipment to inspect stormwater pipes and infrastructure Operate sewer rodder or vacuum truck to clear clogged storm drains and pipes Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment; clean and maintain equipment regularly Establish and maintain safe work zones for crew members, equipment, and the public Perform semi-skilled and unskilled labor such as cleaning catch basins, shaping swales, and placing erosion control materials Work in and around traffic, tight spaces, and underground utilities requiring precision and care Assist with training new or less experienced employees; may serve as crew leader in the absence of supervision Respond to after-hours call-backs as required Perform other related duties as assigned High School Diploma or GED required Three (3) to five (5) years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction or related fields Experience in stormwater, utility, or infrastructure maintenance preferred Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered Special Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and hazardous environments Ability to comply with OSHA safety standards, including Level III bloodborne pathogens requirements Availability for after-hours emergency call-back as needed
