Job Description

Job Summary:
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewer and water infrastructure. This role involves working closely with pipe crews and laborers to support excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and site restoration activities while ensuring compliance with safety standards and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, and compactors to support water and sewer line installation. Excavate trenches with precision to proper line and grade while protecting existing underground utilities. Load, move, and place materials such as soil, gravel, pipes, and structures safely and efficiently. Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance, and report any mechanical issues to supervisors. Work closely with the pipe crew to ensure proper alignment and placement of sewer and water lines. Adhere to OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies at all times, including proper shoring and trench safety. Read and interpret site plans, blueprints, and grade stakes. Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment. Assist with general labor duties on-site when not operating equipment. Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other site personnel to ensure safe and productive operations.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred. Minimum 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment. Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required. Heavy Equipment Operator certification or equivalent training preferred. Strong knowledge of equipment safety regulations and operating procedures. Ability to work in various weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Ability to follow safety protocols and procedures in compliance with OSHA.
Working Conditions:
Outdoor work environment with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy machinery. Must be required to work extended hours, weekends, or night shifts depending on project schedule.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit for long periods while operating equipment. Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination. Ability to climb in and out of large machinery safely.
