Job Description

Position Summary The General Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment used in earthwork, excavation, and site development. This position plays a key role in supporting Dirt Works' field operations by performing grading, trenching, material handling, and related construction activities safely and efficiently. Operators are expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of equipment capabilities, safety procedures, and production requirements while upholding Dirt Works' values of reliability, integrity, and craftsmanship. Core Responsibilities Operate dozers, excavators, skid steers, loaders, rollers, and water trucks for grading, excavation, and material handling tasks. Assist with utility trenching, backfilling, pad prep, and base installation as directed by the Foreman or Project Manager. Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform minor preventive maintenance (fueling, greasing, fluid checks, etc.). Maintain accurate awareness of site conditions, grade stakes, and nearby personnel or utilities. Follow all company safety standards, DOT/OSHA regulations, and specific project safety plans. Communicate clearly with crew members and supervisors to maintain workflow and production goals. Support project logistics such as equipment mobilization, material loading, or basic site layout when required. Performance Expectations Operate assigned equipment safely, efficiently, and within production targets. Maintain clean, well-cared-for machinery. Demonstrate consistent reliability, attendance, and teamwork. Identify and report maintenance issues or unsafe conditions immediately. Uphold all communication and accountability standards outlined in company policy. Behavioral Standards Model professionalism, teamwork, and respect toward coworkers, supervisors, and customers. Maintain focus and situational awareness at all times during operation. Follow chain-of-command communication and jobsite coordination procedures. Exhibit pride in workmanship, safety, and the overall success of the crew. Qualifications Minimum 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction, excavation, or sitework environments. Proficiency in operating at least two or more equipment types (excavator, dozer, skid steer, loader, etc.). Knowledge of earthmoving practices, grading, and trench safety. Ability to read grade stakes, follow foreman direction, and perform work to design tolerances. Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of equipment maintenance requirements. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred. Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in outdoor conditions year-round. Schedule & Work Environment Monday - Friday | Day Shift | Occasional Saturdays as needed Work performed outdoors in various site and weather conditions Must be able to operate in both production and finish phases of sitework
