This is a hands-on, field-based role responsible for safely operating heavy equipment including excavators and backhoes to support underground utility installation, trenching, site preparation, and restoration work. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, dependable, and experienced working around live utilities in fast-paced construction environments. This role works closely with field crews to ensure excavation work is performed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with all safety standards. Qualifications Valid driver's license required (CDL Class A or B preferred but not required) 2+ years of experience operating excavators, backhoes, or similar heavy equipment preferred Strong understanding of underground utility work and safe excavation practices Ability to read and follow utility markings, prints, and jobsite instructions Experience working around live utilities (gas, electric, water, telecom) Strong commitment to OSHA and jobsite safety standards Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions Strong communication skills and ability to work with field crews and supervisors Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team Key Responsibilities Operate excavators and backhoes to perform trenching, digging, grading, and backfilling operations Support underground utility installation including water, sewer, gas, electric, and telecom infrastructure Perform safe excavation around existing utilities using proper digging techniques Follow 811 utility markings and maintain strict adherence to dig safety protocols Load and move materials, debris, and equipment as required on job sites Assist crews with site preparation, restoration, and cleanup activities Conduct daily equipment inspections and report any mechanical or safety issues Maintain clean, safe, and organized job sites Follow all
OSHA, DOT
(if applicable), and company safety procedures Work closely with foremen and field supervisors to complete projects efficiently and safely Preferred Qualifications Experience in underground utility construction strongly preferred Experience with telecom, water, sewer, or gas line installation Previous exposure to hydrovac/vacuum excavation operations is a plus Basic mechanical knowledge of heavy equipment Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus About CDL Utilities CDL Utilities is a leading telecommunications and utility construction company specializing in underground and aerial installation, excavation, fiber optic and coax cabling, splicing, and maintenance services.
