Job Description

Grading Equipment Operator - Dirt Work (Pads, Ponds, Erosion Control) Overview We are seeking a dependable and self-motivated Grading Equipment Operator to join our team, with a focus on precision dirt work for residential and commercial projects. This role specializes in constructing house pads (large and small), shop pads, ponds, tanks, swales, and erosion control features. Applicants MUST know how to operate a rotary laser and accurately shoot grade. This is a core requirement of the position. If you cannot confidently set, check, and maintain grade using a rotary laser and transit level, please do not apply. You'll be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, accurately reading grade using laser and transit levels, transporting machinery, and maintaining your equipment daily. This is a field-based role that requires strong independence, attention to detail, and direct communication with customers to ensure high-quality outcomes. Key Responsibilities Operate dozers, skid steers, and excavators to complete grading work for: House pads and shop pads Ponds and stock tanks Erosion control systems including swales, berms, and diversion ditches Set and check grade using transit and rotary laser levels to ensure proper elevation, slope, and drainage. Interpret and work from grade stakes, engineered site plans, and slope requirements. Implement and maintain erosion control best practices during and after grading work. Tow equipment to and from job sites daily using a company truck and trailer (departing from the shop). Perform routine and preventative maintenance on equipment (greasing, fluid checks, cleaning filters, inspecting wear items). Conduct daily pre-operation inspections and report any mechanical issues or hazards. Work independently with minimal supervision to complete daily assignments. Communicate with customers on-site to clarify expectations and ensure satisfaction. Maintain a clean, safe worksite and follow all PPE and safety protocols.
Qualifications Required:
Proficient in operating a rotary laser and shooting grade without supervision. Experience operating heavy equipment for grading, pad building, pond excavation, and erosion control. Proficiency with transit and laser level systems for setting and verifying grade. Knowledge of erosion control principles, swale construction, and proper drainage layout. Ability to read and interpret grade plans, site maps, and slope requirements. Mechanical aptitude for daily maintenance and basic repairs. Strong organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with Caterpillar equipment is a plus. Valid CDL (Class A or B) preferred or willingness to obtain. Must have reliable transportation to the shop each morning.
